Andy Banta, Storage Janitor at NetApp, discusses the death of the dedicated storage admins. Andy sees them going the way of the database and server admins, as data centers are increasing looking for admins with broad skill sets, with depth in one particular field. Andy reviews the business benefits of this transition, and how policy based management and automation are able to achieve delivery of self-service storage.

Andy Banta, Storage Janitor at NetApp, reviews how vSphere Virtual Volumes integrates with NetApp SolidFire. Virtual Volumes allow for great visibility and policy based management, as opposed to VMFS. NetApp’s overall focus was on maintaining the ability to implement guaranteed QoS, while maintaining scale out and not requiring additional VMs to add capabilities.
