Chief Technologist Chris Wahl gives an introduction to Rubrik for those new to the company. He also presents what Rubrik’s customers are doing with their products in the real world. This includes a brief look at the state of backups to present, which Rubrik sees as inherently inefficient. Chris then introduces Rubrik’s initial response to this, their rack and go backup solution designed for high volume ingest, managed by policy, with global dedupe across a single namespace.

Technical Marketing Engineer Rebecca Fitzhugh discusses now Rubrik can be deployed into a public cloud with Cloud Cluster. This effectively uses the same code based as Rubrik whether in the cloud or on-premises. This uses a 4-node cluster to protect Linux, Windows and SQL Server with full backup and recovery of workloads. This can be extended to include archives to the cloud, and replication to off-site DR sites. Rebecca gives a full demonstration of these capabilities.

Technical Marketing Manager Andrew Miller gives an introduction to Rubrik CloudOn, an archiving solution for virtual machines in the cloud. Included as part of their 4.0 release, this allows users to make a power-on archived snapshot of a VM in the cloud. This is optimized currently for VMware to AWS, with more support planned in forthcoming release. This includes the conversion of the .vmx file from a monolithic to a cloud streamable file, allowing for incremental updates after the initial snapshot.

Database Solutions Engineer Michael Fal gives an overview of SQL Server integrated protection in Rubrik and a demonstration of their new SQL Live Mount functionality. Rubrik offers a point in time restore option, with a focus on operational simplicity. This can be recovered with a simple restore, as an export to a different location, or via Live Mount. This enables instant read/write power-on clones, with the ability to mount clones to multiple hosts. All of this has full automation support via REST API’s.
