Al Rasheed got to hear from Cohesity at Cloud Field Day earlier this year. The company is no stranger to the Field Day experience, so it’s always interesting to see what they present. In this post, Al looks at how Cohesity allows organizations to easily add protection for diverse sources, from on-prem to SaaS apps like Office365, to their platform. They showed how to get started, set policy, and actually implement backup. It’s a remarkable capability to have from the secondary storage stalwart.

VMware is one of the giants in IT, and it’s always a pleasure to have them at a Field Day event. This time, they joined us from their own party, presenting at Tech Field Day Extra at VMworld US 2019. It’s an event that’s packed with important announcements. One of the things they highlighted during their time with the delegates was the addition of virtual GPU and FPGA with Bitfusion, something increasingly important in the world of Ai and ML workloads.

Project Pacific at Tech Field Day Extra at VMworld 2019

Kit Colbert with VMware shared a blog post about the company’s perspective presenting at Tech Field Day Extra at VMworld US 2019. They did a deep dive on Project Specific, the company’s rearchitecture of vSphere to integrate Kubernetes. Commvault Buys Hedvig for $225 Million to Take on Secondary Startups

In this post, Justin Warren gives another look at Commvault’s recent acquisition of Hedvig. Both companies are familiar to the Tech Field Day audience, having presented at past events. Justin thinks the acquisition provides a great exit for Hedvig on the business front. Whether it will pay off for Commvault will depend on how well it integrates Hedvig’s exciting software-defined storage platform.

Commvault Acquires Hedvig for $225M, What Should We Expect?

Commvault and Hedvig are no strangers to presenting at Tech Field Day. After the former bought the latter, Max Mortillaro considers what to expect from the acquisition. Max breaks down Hedvig’s software-defined storage stack, which offers hardware agnostic block, file and object storage support across private and public clouds, designed for massive scale. This appears to be a solid technological acquisition and should allow Commvault to continue to expand the scope of their business.

VMware Entering the IT Infrastructure Composability Game

Enrico Signoretti found VMworld US 2019 to be full of fascinating announcements. It showed VMware making serious inroads into composability for virtualized servers, with the ability to now virtualize GPUs over the network. Enrico sees this working similar to how VMware treats NVMe storage resources in vSphere and VSAN. He doesn’t see this completely disrupting the current composable infrastructure market, but its an important step for VMware.
