Cloud Field Day – VMware
Ned Bellavance is joining us as a delegate again at Cloud Field Day this week. He’s published a series of posts looking at each of the presenters, and in this one he casts his gaze toward VMware. Their presentation will focus on VMware on AWS, something Ned has been skeptical about since it launched. He still thinks its a viable, and in some cases appropriate, solution for some organizations. We’ll see if their presentation can change his mind.

VMware is presenting this week at Cloud Field Day, and Sonali Desai has a post on their blog previewing what they’ll be discussing with the delegates. The presentation should provide a deep dive into VMware Cloud on AWS, with dedicated parts looking at compute, networking and storage. Tune in to get a deep dive along with some demos.

Intel Announces Cascade Lake Xeon, Optane DC Persistent, Ethernet 800, and More at Data Centric Innovation Day
Jeffrey Powers was one of the delegates at Intel Data-Centric Innovation Day. In this post, he looks at all the Intel announcements at the event. The 2nd generation Scalable Xeons, now with up to 56 cores, certainly made an impression, but were hardly the only highlight. Intel Optane DC, the 100Gb 800-series Ethernet controller, and more showed that Intel was focusing on faster processing, better control of memory, low latency delivery, and security of your data.

For Chin-Fah, data analytics is a competitive edge, so keeping and analyzing more data is essential for any business. A VAST-ly Different Storage Story
VAST Data made their first big public splash since coming out of stealth at Storage Field Day last month. At they event, they showed off their “disaggregated share everything architecture” meant to offer hyperscaler agility and scalability without the cost and data gravity of the public cloud. For Becky Elliott, their message of reducing complexity while allowing for scale really resonated.

Intel – Putting Substance Behind Its Strategy Slideware
Intel’s recent swath of announcements from its Data Centric Innovation Day marked a bit of a culmination in messaging for Kurt Marko. This sees Intel no longer concerned about talking to the general public, and the event showed them talking directly to cloud builders and enterprise IT. The announcement of 2nd generation Scalable Xeon processors and Optane DC both highlight that servers are the core of Intel’s business, with further announcements aiming to make them core to many existing and emerging datacenter categories. BLOG – NFD20 – Fortinet SDWAN
In this post, Rodrigo Rovere takes a look at what Fortinet presented at Networking Field Day earlier this year. He was interested in hearing about their SD-WAN solutions and how they would stand out in this quickly crowding market. Fortinet really focused their presentation on their security differentiation based around their Security Fabric. While Rodrigo wanted a little more detail on the SD-WAN specifics, he found it an interesting presentation nonetheless.

Ned Bellavance will be joining us at Cloud Field Day next week, but before he arrives, he’s doing his homework on the presenters. In this post, he’s taking a look at Sysdig. Ned was impressed by how succinctly the company states it’s mission: Monitor and secure containers across the entire software lifecycle. Nyansa returned to Networking Field Day with their presentation earlier this year. At the event, they showed their solution for how to handle the proliferation of IoT devices in the enterprise. In this post, Stephen Foskett looks at how they inventory the devices, verify connectivity and performance, characterize their behavior, detect and secure unusual actions, and verify that mitigations are working.

Tracing Down a Root Cause With LightStep Tracing
Moving from monolithic apps toward microservices has sped development, but brought new complexities. LightStep showed off their LightStep [x]PM platform at Cloud Field Day last year, but this was targeted at large enterprises. With their recently released LightStep Tracing, the company is offering a SaaS solution that provides an easy on ramp into distributed tracing, without a completed setup process.

Intel Data-Centric Innovation Day: A Live View
Scott Lowe attended Tech Field Day Exclusive At Intel Data-Centric Innovation Day as a delegate, and live blogged all the announcements from Intel at the event. There were a lot of major announcements, with Intel showing seven new products, including CPUs, Optane memory, network adapters, and more.

Aside from organizing Tech Field Day Exclusive at Intel Data-Centric Innovation Day 2019, Stephen Foskett was also live blogging all the announcements from Intel. The Foundation of the Future With Barefoot Networks
Tom Hollingsworth is impressed by some of the recent announcement from Barefoot Networks. The first was announced at OCP which saw new support for P4 and Tofino in the Software for Open Networking in the Cloud. Then there was the company’s announced partnership with IP Infusion (another Networking Field Day presenter). Finally Barefoot announced partnerships with Xilinx and Kaloom to bring Tofino and P4 to their switching platforms. For Tom, this sets the company on a firm foundation for the future, one where they don’t try to bring customers to use cases that might not apply, but instead meet customers where they already are.
