Tech Field Day Coverage

Our delegate panel includes independent writers and thought leaders, and we collect their coverage of the event, Tech Field Day presentations, and sponsoring companies here.

Join us at Tech Field Day 18

At Tech Field Day events, we like to get a wide swath of companies to present. Some are unknown startups, who can offer an interesting and insurgent perspective. But it’s also just as important to hear from industry stalwarts, like VMware. They presented at Tech Field Day last week, doing a deep dive on vSAN and vSphere Health specifically. You’ll need to check out the full video of their presentation to hear all the details.

Cumulus VX Spine and Leaf

In this post, Marina Ferreira details how she used the Cumulus Linux Demo Framework from Cumulus Networks to built her own spine and leaf architecture in about ten minutes. She was impressed by the amount of work being done in the background, even if the setup did require a bit of Linux backend knowledge. It also uses a Ansible playbook to push the configuration to the spine and leafs, as well as adding new interfaces. Along with a healthy amount of demos, she found this whiteboard session by Pete Lumbis at Networking Field Day to be invaluable.

Privileged Account Management with CyberArk

For Chris Grundemann, one of the best ways to protect a cloud service is to implement a rock-solid security solution. To truly achieve this, privileged account management must be a primary concern. At Security Field Day, he heard from CyberArk how they are implementing this for their customer base. The company was originally founded in 1999, and have used their experience guarding secrets to trickle down an excellent PAM solution to customers.

Zerto: The Road to IT Resiliency

Arjan Timmerman attended Storage Field Day this summer, and one of the companies he heard an in-depth technical deep dive from was Zerto. The company has had an intriguing solution for replication of virtual workloads on vSphere, expanding to other hypervisors and public clouds over time. Arjan reviews the technical merits of their solution, and looks at how this has enabled them to create a backup solution as part of their IT resiliency portfolio.

You may say I’m a dreamer…

Al Rasheed has been to a few Field Day events stretching back into last year. For 2019, he’s very excited to see what’s on tap for Tech Field Day Extra at Cisco Live Europe. He’ll be joining what he calls the “Dream Team” of delegates for the event (we’ll leave it to Al to tell us which one is Christian Laettner). He continues to be amazed at how participating in Field Day events has opened new doors and opportunities. We’re just glad to have such an insightful and knowledgable delegate around the table.

Enable your Data: Komprise

At Storage Field Day late last year, Arjan Timmerman got to see Komprise show off their data management solution. For Arjan, it was important to position this as an important difference between data management and what has become the secondary storage market. What Arjan saw was a very thoughtful software solution that enables organizations to transform their data without disrupting existing hardware or operations.

BiB 068: Aporeto’s Identity Based Workload Segmentation

In this episode of the Briefings in Brief podcast, host Ethan Banks looks at what he heard from Aporeto at Security Field Day late last year. What he saw was far from another also-ran security startup. Aporeto distinguishes itself by looking at application security as separate from network security. They provide a cryptographic identifier to all hosts, containers, processes, functions, and users, which is used as the basis for a robust policy engine. This decoupling of network and workload security is key for a true defense-in-depth approach.

Using Identity To Secure Workloads with Aporeto

Security issues with digital identity are only going to increase with time. At Security Field Day, Aporeto presented on how they help organizations manage this in a scalable way. Tom Hollingsworth looks how they offer digitally sign containers. This allows organizations to trust a workload, from which you can build robust policy automation around that foundation of trust.

Cisco SD-WAN: On-Ramp to the Cloud

Phil Gervasi always has his radar up to detect marketing FUD from IT companies. But at Networking Field Day last year, a lot of what he heard from Cisco about SD-WAN rang true. The category is hardly new, and Cisco’s acquisition of Viptela is 2017 validated it as an area of focus for the company. For Cisco, they tie mass SD-WAN adoption to cloud adoption, with an overall theme of how to on-ramp to and manage a multi-cloud topology. Phil runs through what they presented and how it enables that for organizations.
