Considering The Future Of Juniper’s Contrail And OpenContrail/Tungsten

Greg Farro runs down the implecations of OpenContrail moving from a more Juniper Networks controlled open source project to the Linux Foundation. To accompany this change, OpenContrail is being rebranded to Tungsten Fabric. Greg compares this to what he saw of Juniper’s main Contrail platform, which continues to add features specifically for the enterprise market to make it viable in multi-cloud and hybrid cloud deployments.

My thoughts on Aruba’s Atmosphere 2018

CFD3 Prep Post: Riverbed

Justin Warren continues his preview posts for the upcoming presenters at Cloud Field Day, turning now toward Riverbed. He reviews how the company has grown from one focused on WAN optimization solutions, to SD-WAN and acquiring Xirrus. He’s looking forward to hearing their cloud story, including how they can extend their unified network fabric as an extension of their SD-WAN implementation.

What is Redfish?

Andrea Mauro wrote up on explainer of Redfish, the open industry standard specification, API and schema that specifies RESTful interface and utilizes JSON and Data. He highlights why it’s designed to supplant the Intelligent Platform Management Interface due to its extensive support of scripting languages and RESTful APIs. He sees it as mature enough to replace IPMI or proprietary solutions like Dell’s iDRAC.

OpenContrail & dNOS Join The Linux Foundation, Get New Names

Drew Conry-Murray highlights the addition of two projects to the Linux Foundation, OpenContrail and dNOS. Drew got to hear about developments on OpenContrail at Networking Field Day from Juniper Networks, which is an open source derivation of their proprietary Contrail software. Drew isn’t sure if either project will become a major disruptor in the enterprise networking space, but he thinks the increasing move to open sourcing these projects will lead to “breaking the stranglehold of legacy vendors on how networks are built and operated.”

Huawei Dorado – All about Speed

At Storage Field Day last month, Chin-Fah Heoh and the other delegates got to hear Huawei present for the first time. The presentation went into an architectural deep dive on Dorado V3, their premiere all-flash storage array. Chin-Fah was impressed with the speed the array is capable of, even with triple parity RAID. He’s looking forward to seeing more from the company going forward.

Cloud Field Day 3 Preview: Veritas

Chris Evans gives a preview of Veritas ahead of their presentation at Cloud Field Day this week. The company is traditionally associated with storage, so Chris is interested in hearing their cloud story, particularly around CloudMobility and CloudPoint. He’s interested to hear how they differentiate these offerings from competing companies in their space.

IT Security Is a People Problem

Forcepoint had a rather unique presentation at Tech Field Day in February. The company focused on the failing of traditional security, and how they have solutions to address the largely ignored risk of security breaches inside an organization. Alastair Cooke wrote up his thoughts on their User and Entity Behaviour Analytics. Provided an organization discloses that these kind of analytics are being done, Alastair found it an interesting addition to an organization’s security toolset.

Hedvig’s Evolution

When he first saw Hedvig in 2016, Dan Frith already thought they had a good story around scalable, software-defined storage. After seeing them again at Storage Field Day this month, he found increased maturity around their interface and data protection features. Instead of having to drop into the CLI, all tasks during the presentation were easily handled in their GUI. He thinks the improvements shown demonstrate a company that listens to the needs of their customers.

Datrium Cloud DVX – Not Your Father’s Cloud Data Protection Solution

Datrium presented at their second Storage Field Day, providing details on their Cloud DVX solution. Dan Frith wrote up his thoughts on it, and whether it lives up to Datrium’s claim of being “Cloud Backup Done Right”. Compared to a lot of “cloud-ready” data protection solution, Dan found Cloud DVX to be an “elegant solution”, with a lot of efficiency that should be very appealing to Datrium customers.
