Justin thinks the acquisition provides a great exit for Hedvig on the business front. Commvault Acquires Hedvig for $225M, What Should We Expect?
Commvault and Hedvig are no strangers to presenting at Tech Field Day. After the former bought the latter, Max Mortillaro considers what to expect from the acquisition. Max breaks down Hedvig’s software-defined storage stack, which offers hardware agnostic block, file and object storage support across private and public clouds, designed for massive scale. This appears to be a solid technological acquisition and should allow Commvault to continue to expand the scope of their business.
Hedvig’s Evolution
When he first saw Hedvig in 2016, Dan Frith already thought they had a good story around scalable, software-defined storage. After seeing them again at Storage Field Day this month, he found increased maturity around their interface and data protection features. Instead of having to drop into the CLI, all tasks during the presentation were easily handled in their GUI. He thinks the improvements shown demonstrate a company that listens to the needs of their customers.
A look at the Hedvig distributed Hybrid Cloud storage solution
Chan Ekanayake had been familiar with Hedvig for some time, and knew them to be a flexible, truly distributed software-defined storage company. After getting some updates from the company at Storage Field Day, his takeaway: They are a good hybrid SDS solution that can cater for a mixed workload across the private data center as well as public cloud platforms.

My dilemma of stateful storage marriage
Chin-Fah Heoh has been thinking about stateful data in stateful storage containers and how they would interact with distributed applications containers and functions-as-a-service. This led to a consideration of what a distributed data systems would look like, wherein the idea of a “data center” seems like an oxymoron. He’s seen some past Storage Field Day companies offer pieces on how to get to a distributed data system. Chin-Fah will be at Storage Field Day next month, and looks forward to seeing how Hedvig and WekaIO will offer more pieces to this puzzle.
