In this post, Security Field Day delegate Zoë Rose takes a look at a number of incidence response and security tools aimed at SMEs. These often have the same issues as larger organizations, but must face them with smaller staffs and budgets. Tools targeting these customers need to be particularly efficient to maximize both. Zoë takes a look at several solutions, TotalView by PathSolutions (who presented at Security Field Day, PRTG by Paessler (which has been featured at several Field Day events), and Solarwinds MSP RMM (no stranger to our events either). She lists the pros and cons of each solution, and its a great roundup to start your research.
Paessler’s PRTG Even Monitors The Weather
Scott McDermott got to hear from Paessler at Tech Field Day Extra at Cisco Live US this year. He had evaluated their PRTG monitoring solution before, but got a new appreciation of it from their presentation. PRTG supports a vast array of sensor, with up to 5,000 per VM supported. These can be typical metrics, but also support unusual metrics, like fan speed and even weather conditions. Scott was definitely impressed by the versatility.
PRTG Monitoring Software Now Available in Cloud Version
Ivan Pepelnjak says that one of the most interesting presentations during Tech Field Day Extra at Cisco Live Berlin was from Paessler. Paessler is developing a little known monitoring software called PRTG which they will offer as a SaaS service running in Amazon cloud. Ivan completely agrees with this decision by Paessler and recommends their cloud service as an alternate network monitoring and management tool.
Cisco Live 2017, engineering awesomeness
Amy Arnold reflects on her experience at Tech Field Day and Cisco Live US, reviewing OpenGear’s new API, Paessler’s new monitoring solution, and NetApp’s FlexPod SF.
What I’m Looking Forward to at Cisco Live 2017
Scott McDermott is in Vegas and ready to take on Cisco Live. In this post, he shares what he’s looking forward to at the event. This includes a trio of Tech Field Day Extra presentations from Paessler, OpenGear, and NetApp.
Let’s Talk About Paessler
Paessler presented at Tech Field Day Extra from Interop ITX last month, giving an overview of the PRTG monitoring solution. Robert Boardman has been using PRTG in his home lab, and was anxious to get more details during the presentation. While being Windows only is a bit of a limitation, Robert really enjoys PRTG’s self-contained nature, its fully customizable sensors, and that it allows for distributed monitoring.
A look at Paessler PRTG
After seeing their presentation from Tech Field Day Extra at Cisco Live Europe, Jasper Bongertz decided to give Paessler PRTG a an extended look and write up his thoughts. It’s an impressively comprehensive rundown of the solutions monitoring capabilities. He walks through the setup processes, which is notably faster and easier than other open-source alternatives. He really likes how easy it is to setup monitoring sensors, which don’t require any complex configuration. In the end, although PRTG isn’t free like other alternative, the time you save may still make it the better value in the long run.
InteropITX 2017 Breakdown
Frank Owen has been going to Interop, and it’s his self-professed favorite IT conference. He wrote up a review of the experience this year, which included the Workshop/Seminar pass for the first time. With this, he saw a lot of interesting sessions on the leadership track. He also attended a Tech Field Day Extra presentation from Paessler, with a look at their PRTG infrastructure monitoring solution. We’ll look forward to seeing Frank there again!
Paessler PRTG – Network Monitoring Made in Germany
Paessler’s PRTG monitoring tool is an interesting solution. Andreas Lesslhumer highlights that it’s uses aren’t just limited to network and server load monitoring, but can now also be used for virtual infrastructure. Impressively, this is done without any installed software on the monitored system. PRTG instead leverages native management interfaces. And if you’re into it, you can even monitor your network from your smartwatch, Paessler offers apps for Android Wear and Apple’s Watch OS.
A Warning in Time – PRTG
Alastair Cooke joined the Tech Field Day delegate panel at both VMworld US and Europe this year, and he used the Barcelona experience to get PRTG up and running. Good thing he did! PRTG caught a disk capacity issue before he ever noticed it! Uploading 80 videos in 3 days will do that. vBrownBag + Tech Field Day + PRTG = great!
