As 2017 comes to a close, there’s the inevitable glut of predictions as to what’s in store for the next year. IT is no exception to this, and Dan Frith entertains some from Primary Data. Dan saw the company present at Storage Field Day earlier this year, and looks at their predictions for what 2018 will bring for software-defined storage and HCI.
Primary Data Attacks Application Ignorance
At Primary Data’s Storage Field Day presentation, they brought up the idea that applications are “unaware”. This ignorance is to the underlying infrastructure, as they are not generally written with a specific set of hardware or specification in mind. Dan Frith shares his thoughts on their solution to this problem, DataSphere, “a metadata engine that automates the flow of data across the enterprise infrastructure and the cloud to meet evolving application demands”.
Storage is Getting Cloudier!
Stephen Foskett shares his thoughts on the increasing cloudification of storage. He highlights NetApp’s move into Microsoft’s Azure cloud as a prime example. It’s all part of what Stephen calls the “Year of Cloud Extension”!

The idea of incorporating cloud storage into the data center has been around for a while. But Stephen Foskett thinks we’re seeing philosophically different approaches to it recently, with many companies embracing the premise of data non-locality. Stephen sees this change in the assumption from data being tied to a data center to the cloud as a transformative shift allowing for true data center transformation.
Primary Data set to make their 5th appearance at Storage Field Day
Primary Data returns for their fifth presentation at next month’s Storage Field Day. Mike Preston will be there, and he has a preview to get everyone up to speed. He reviews their corporate history and DataSphere solution, which helps organization disaggregate applications from the data they use. It’s an interesting product, and we’re sure to get a technical deep dive during their presentation.
