This gives him some helpful long term context to identify larger industry trends he sees playing out among otherwise unrelated presentations. At the most recent Storage Field Day, the importance of tiering across the storage industry came across loud and clear. From Tiger Technology demoing their simple, seamless and smart filter driver for Windows servers, to Komprise analyzing an organizations entire data domain to optimize data placement, to WekaIO using object storage in the back-end of their file system to store unused blocks, Enrico saw many examples of tiering being used to provide performance, capacity, and scalability at a reasonable price.

Storage Field Day 19 – Vendor Previews
Chris Evans is no stranger to storage. His voice and experience is always welcome around the delegate table, and in this post, he brings both in previewing the presenting companies. He’s looking forward to the second day and hearing about Dell EMC doing deep dives into Isilon, DevOps and PowerOne. There are also a number of new presenters that Chris doesn’t have much background with. These include the DRaaS company Infrascale, the open-source enterprise-class object storage platform from MinIO, and Tiger Technologies. Tiger is competing in the crowded software-defined storage market, so Chris is interested to see how they will differentiate themselves. Western Digital will also be an interesting presentation, as the company has shifted it’s enterprise storage vision. Overall, it sounds like there’s not much Chris isn’t looking forward to at the event.

Gina Rosenthal has extensive history in the storage industry, and we’re thrilled to now have her in the delegate ranks. In this post, she highlights what she’s looking forward to at the event. The Fast WekaIO File System Saves You Money!
Jon Klaus takes a look at what he saw from WekaIO at Storage Field Day. They claim to offer “the fastest and most scalable parallel file system for AI and technical compute workloads.” That’s an impressive claim, but at the event, Jon got to see an equally impressive demo, showing stunning performance for single client random read and random writes, which wasn’t disrupted by failing nodes. Overall Jon found WekaIO’s file system to be a solid offering with excellent performance, wrapped in a modern and intuitive GUI.
WekaIO Continues to Evolve
WekaIO definitely made an impression on the Storage Field Day delegates last month, and Dan Frith is no exception. In this post, he looks at WekaIO Matrix. This is a feature rich software-defined storage solution that can run across a breadth of environments, offering performance faster than a local system. The do this with a storage architecture built to take advantage of the native capabilities of flash, without worrying about legacy HDD. Dan thinks they made a compelling case to move people who need the performance of DAS with the benefits of distributed storage.
Can the WekaIO Matrix File System Be Faster Than DAS?
Direct Attached Storage (DAS), offers a lot of advantages in terms of speed and latency, but comes with a suite of problems. If nothing else, it forces applications to deal with data integrity and resiliency issues instead of having it as part of SAN. Chris Evans looks at how WekaIO addresses the shortcomings of DAS while keeping the high-performance and low latency. At Storage Field Day last month, they showed how their scale-out parallel file system can provide exceptional performance that’s only limited by the bandwidth of the network card. By rewritting at the file system layer and lower, WekaIO is able to offer distributed storage built to take full advantage of modern storage media.
Weka.IO and My First Official Briefing
Before hearing WekaIO’s presentation at Storage Field Day last month, Matt Leib was well aware of the company. After hearing them on numerous podcasts and researching them independently, he’d been impressed. Parallel file systems can be perilous, but Matt found that WekaIO offers the resiliency, scalability, and ease of deployment that so many ersatz competitors lack. After seeing an architectural deep dive and demo at the event, Matt is now even more convinced about their solution.
WekaIO Controls Their Performance Destiny
Chin-Fah Heoh first heard from WekaIO last year at Storage Field Day and has been following the company ever since. After seeing them again at Storage Field Day last month, it proved to be an exclamation point on an already momentous 2018. Chin-Fah finds their architectural approach of complete control of the I/O subsystem and the NVMe devices and drivers provides them with incredible scale. They combine excellent throughput performance with very low latency using this approach. The piece further breaks down what makes WekaIO stand out, but Chin-Fah thinks this approach will lead to many more years of impressive growth ahead for the company.

While not a one size fits all solution, Dan thinks its a good option for those needing performance focused, massively parallel, scale-out storage solution with the ability to combine NVMe and S3.

My dilemma of stateful storage marriage
Chin-Fah Heoh has been thinking about stateful data in stateful storage containers and how they would interact with distributed applications containers and functions-as-a-service. This led to a consideration of what a distributed data systems would look like, wherein the idea of a “data center” seems like an oxymoron. He’s seen some past Storage Field Day companies offer pieces on how to get to a distributed data system. Chin-Fah will be at Storage Field Day next month, and looks forward to seeing how Hedvig and WekaIO will offer more pieces to this puzzle.
