Nigel Poulton and NetApp Assess the State of Kubernetes

Independent Kubernetes trainer and expert Nigel Poulton joins Principal Technologist Kirk Ryan of NetApp to discuss the state of Kubernetes and the cloud in 2021. Poulton points out that, 7 years into the development of Kubernetes, most of the groundwork is stable and mature, but the higher-level management tools are iterating at a fast pace. The process of getting and installing Kubernetes is a lot easier thanks to hosted Kubernetes platforms developed by cloud service providers. The next trend is to focus more on the applications being deployed in the cloud rather than the infrastructure. The future is in integrated systems that bring the legacy of enterprise tools to this new world of cloud applications.

Jeremy Deshotel, Solutions Architect for Spot by NetApp, discusses the need for optimization of infrastructure management for Kubernetes. CloudOps is a description of the best practices, processes, and tools applied to successfully deploy and operate modern applications in the cloud, including DevOps and FinOps. Spot by NetApp provides continuous optimization of cloud applications, extending continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD). It includes FinOps (Cloud Analyzer and Eco) and DevOps (Elastigroup and Ocean). In this presentation, Deshotel focuses on Spot Ocean, which enables sport instances management in Kubernetes. Applications can scale horizontally or vertically, and Spot continually balances these instances to meet application demands and minimize idle resources.

Jeremy Deshotel, Solutions Architect for Spot by NetApp, demonstrates Ocean, part of Spot by NetApp. Using three deployments in Amazon Web Services (AWS), Ocean is able to dynamically balance using automatic instance scaling with Ocean by Spot. This achieves extremely high utilization, as demonstrated in the Spot management interface, simplifying operation and reducing cost.

Sayan Saha, Sr. Director, Product Management, introduces NetApp Astra, application-aware data management built for Kubernetes. Enterprises are accelerating the deployment of business-critical applications on Kubernetes. These are stateful applications with high-availability and mobility needs. NetApp has developed Astra to provide a set of application-aware data services for enterprise applications in Kubernetes. It is a fully-managed cloud service provided by NetApp and will work across many public clouds, starting with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) on NetApp’s Cloud Volumes Service storage.

Garrett Mueller, Director of Engineering, demonstrates application-aware data management for Kubernetes with NetApp Astra. From the Astra dashboard, Mueller adds an application cluster to be managed in Google Cloud Platform (GCP). He then switches to an application view, showing that a demo application can be dynamically managed by Astra, including storage clones across regions with all application resources. He then applies a protection policy that leverages snapshots of data and resources.
