Lino Telera got a look at what HPE is doing post-acquisition with Nimble Storage at Cloud Field Day earlier this year. From this, Lino looks at HPE Nimble Cloud Volumes, which provides the ability to “share” storage resources across cloud providers. He saw this as an important piece for any organization looking to embrace a hybrid cloud deployment.
HPE Nimble Storage at Cloud Field Day – Enterprise Storage
HPE presented on their recently acquired Nimble Storage portfolio at Cloud Field Day. Theresa Miller like what she saw from their cloud-based SAN-like option for cloud storage. Fundamentally, she’s not sure this will be an option for many companies just starting their cloud journey, but rather thinks it has a ready market with many of the existing big cloud companies.
Understanding HPE Nimble Storage’s Cloud Volumes
Ethan Banks writes about HPE Nimble Storage’s Cloud Volumes, which they presented about at Cloud Field Day. Cloud Volumes are a cloud storage product focused on helping enterprises move their business applications to the cloud. Ethan sees the idea behind Cloud Volumes, but worries that it is a short-term product filling a gap that enterprises will eventually be able to bridge themselves, and therefore will not be particularly profitable for HPE.

Cloud Field Day 2: Preparing to rock!
Preparing for Cloud Field Day, Lino Telera outlines what he’s looking forward to at the event. He focuses on HPE Nimble Storage’s multicloud storage, ServiceNow’s approach to providing tools for compliance during task execution without impacts, and Gigamon’s network monitoring tactics.
Nimble’s InfoSight – An #SFD12 Follow-up
Matt Leib reviews what he saw from Nimble Storage at last month’s Storage Field Day. He goes into what he really liked about their InfoSight solution. This allows collect information across environments and send it to a secure collective database. This allows you to quickly cross reference anomalies across environments to better diagnose problems. Overall, Matt came away really impressed.

Nimble Storage Gets Cloudy
Nimble Storage presented at Storage Field Day last week and talked about their block storage as a service called Nimble Cloud Volumes. Dan Frith wrote up his thoughts. Nimble Storage presented this as a compelling alternative to other block storage options, offering 6-9s of availability, and using a variety of public cloud partners for compute to avoid vendor lock-in. Dan likes what he saw, but wonders if this will be appealing to their existing customer base, or if this will be used to draw in new business.
Nimble, HPE and 20-Year Old Architectures
Chris Evans looks at the recently announced HPE acquisition plans for Nimble Storage. He looks at both companies positions in the storage market, and the challenges and opportunities the acquisition will enable. For Chris, the key to the overall storage market is to increase customer share on relatively thin margins. If nothing else, Chris sees Nimble Storage as a way for HPE to gracefully retire 3PAR and provide a competitive offering in the space.
HPE is buying Nimble Storage
Andrea Mauro wrote up a reaction to the announced plans for HPE to acquire Nimble Storage. Andrea thinks HPE already had a solid storage portfolio, so he found it very surprising. Ultimately he thinks the key to this acquisition might be Nimble’s non-storage products. This includes InfoSight and their Nimble Cloud Volumes. For Andrea, these seem to offer something that HPE currently doesn’t have in their portfolio.
Tech Field Day Extra VMworld 2016 Europe – Nimble Storage
After attending Tech Field Day Extra at VMworld Europe in October, Lino Telera gives an overview of Nimble Storage’s presentation. Nimble Storage’s application specific approach to storage creates profiles for each application, which define the application policy for the hypervisor or OS. All this matches with Lino’s view: Application is the king!
