One Year in @ VMware – A Q&A With Myself

Matt Crape has been working at VMware for about a year. In this post, he reflects on how the opportunity came at him very quickly, and what he misses from working on the customer side. One of the things he misses are events like Tech Field Day. But as Matt says, without those events, he couldn’t be where he is today. We’re glad we could be part of Matt’s career journey!

Taking the Pulse of the WLAN Industry: Mobility Field Day 4 Approaches

Mobility Field Day is coming up soon and we’re excited to have Lee Badman coming back as a delegate for the event. This will be his eleventh Field Day event, and as such, Lee has a lot of experience with it. In this post, he talk a little about what makes him come back to Field Day, what makes it unique, and what goes on after the cameras stop rolling.

My Tech Field Day Experience

Evan Mintzer attended his first Field Day event as a delegate for Security Field Day. He really appreciated the unique “un-conference” quality of the event, which allowed for real communication and community building between the delegates and the presenting companies. He was really impressed not just with the technical content, but with the organization and thought that went into organizing it. It was great to have Evan there and we can’t wait to have him back.

I Met Stephen Foskett

In this post, Jim Palmer details his experience meeting Tech Field Day founder Stephen Foskett. Jim had previously attended Wireless Field Day last year, but got invited to Tech Field Day this year. Getting exposed to new technology and new people was a really unique opportunity and it was great to have Jim at the event. He even got Stephen to explain RAID storage to him!

How Cisco Live! Changed My Career…

With Cisco Live US happening this week, Justin Cohen is thinking back to how the event changed his career. He’s been attending since 2012, and got to know the community after meeting Tom Hollingsworth there. Things changed after 2016, when he got invited to Networking Field Day. Today, Justin is working as an Innovation Architect at Cisco, his dream job. It’s been a long journey centered around the event.

What You See and What You Get When You Follow Me

As the founder and organizer-in-chief of Tech Field Day, Stephen Foskett wrote up a post explaining what you get when you follow him on social media. While Tech Field Day content will show up there, he goes through his thought process of what to share and how it is demarcated in the feed.

Security Field Day – The Non-Conference

The Tech Field Day team started the Security Field Day event because they recognized that security is just as vital to IT operations as storage, networking, or virtualization. In this post, Tom Hollingsworth talks about how it distinguishes itself in the world of security event, by being the non-conference. That means no crowds, in-depth technical discussions, and live streamed for all to see.

Dell and the Power of Influencing Influencers

Chin-Fah, HEOH is very impressed by how Dell is handling influencer relations, and discusses his reaction to being invited to Dell Technologies World at the end of April. Chin-Fah has been a Field Day delegate as well and says their work with influencers reminds him of how we do things here at Gestalt IT. Thanks!

Evaluate Before You Purchase- Especially For Enterprise Wi-Fi

Trusting the word of companies that want to sell you your enterprise Wi-Fi. Lee Badman breaks down all the promises that he’s heard in his purchasing travails, and what the truth often looks like. He recommends evaluating before you buy, and looking for companies willing to endure the scrutiny of events like Tech Field Day.

Why Innovation, Risk, and Curves make for the best careers

In this post, Justin Paul considers the fact that the rapid change of technology means that virtually no one in IT is going to be doing the same job for their entire careers. To that effect, he looks at how markets change from early adopters and innovators, and uses that to show when it might be time to look to change your career to catch the next way. Keeping up on new technology can be daunting, and he suggested Tech Field Day presentation videos as a great way to stay informed. We agree!

Tech Field Day: Day 1

Paul Snyder was one of the delegates invited to the inaugural Security Field Day earlier this month. This was his first time at a Field Day event, he found it to be one of the best professional experiences he’s ever had. He found the event separates itself from others in the industry, because the delegates have total candor and freedom to express how they truly feel about the presenting companies. Maintaining this independence is critical for maintaining constructive dialogues.

Day 1 – Networking Field Day 19

Networking Field Day is underway this week out in Silicon Valley. We’re thrilled to have Al Rasheed along for the event. He’s already written up some thoughts from his first day traveling to the event. This saw him meet with fellow delegates and looking forward to the coming presentations the rest of the week. Be sure to watch all the Networking Field Day presentations live this week!

Presenting To The D-Suite

As an event lead with Tech Field Day, Tom Hollingsworth has a lot of experience hearing presenters talk to IT professionals, the “do-ers” in IT. He looks at the problem of treating these presentations the same as C-level audiences, who are more concerned with problems then technical details. The post provides a lot of great tips for speaking to this very specific audience.

Tech Field Day 17

Adam Fisher attended his first Tech Field Day as a delegate earlier this month, after getting a taste of the experience at Tech Field Day Extra at VMworld US 2018. This post catalogs his experience with the event, which he describes as “amazing.” For him, the technical deep dives and in-depth conversations really highlighted for far Adam has come in his career already, and inspired him to stay hungry to learn more. We hope to see him as a delegate at another event soon.

One thing led to another….. vCommunity edition

Ian Sanderson shares some interesting perspective and experience entering the vCommunity over the last few years. This has led him to becoming a vExpert, as well as applying to become a Tech Field Day delegate. This has led him to expand his areas of interest and find out what’s going on outside of his existing areas of expertise.

9 Years of Tech Field Days with Stephen Foskett

In a recent TotalPackets video, Tech Field Day founder Stephen Foskett was interviewed by Kori Younger. They discussed why Tech Field Day resonates with both presenting companies and the larger IT community of experts.

Why Should You Be A Field Day Delegate?

What are the benefits of being a Tech Field Day delegate? Brandon Carroll wrote up a very thoughtful piece on the subject. While the event didn’t “make” his career, it did allow it to go to new heights, thanks to the networking and knowledge gained. Though Brandon is now on the vendor side of the aisle, it’s always great to hear the value that people get from coming to our events.

The #vCommunity

We were thrilled to invite Al Rasheed to be a delegate at Tech Field Day Extra at VMworld this year. In this post, he writes about how he came to decide to sign up to be a delegate, leaning on the experiences of two recent Field Day invitees, Ken Nalbone and Nick Nick Janetakis for reference. We’re glad he found the event well organized and managed. If you ever wondered about becoming a Field Day delegate, be sure to start by signing up on our site.

Copy Data Management has a new player

Matt Leib got to get an inside look at Dell EMC’s new IDPA and DPS offerings. This opportunity gave deep insight into the Data Protection Appliance market, making it all that more interesting. Matt found his Tech Field Day delegate experience to be vital in cutting through company FUD. Even after all that, he still found what Dell EMC is doing to be impressive.

Mobility Field Day 3 – A Delegate

It’s always great to hear about people’s first Field Day event experience. In this post, Jim Palmer talks about some of the behind the scenes of being a delegate at Mobility Field Day. It was a packed event and Jim was impressed by his fellow delegates around the table.
