Roopak Parikh, Co-Founder and CTO, introduces Platform9 at Cloud Field Day 2 before handing the presentation over to Jeremy Brooks, Customer Success Engineering Manager, to discuss hybrid cloud management. Platform9 defined hybrid of any combination of resources from multiple cloud end-points. Their solution to hybrid cloud management is based around an open-source orchestration framework that can provide a single pane of glass for all cloud resources without being locked in to a specific vendor.

Jeremy Brooks, Customer Success Engineering Manager, demonstrates Platform9 OpenStack Omni on Google Cloud Platform. This is a new release for Omni, with the UI tied specifically to a Google Cloud instance. Jeremy demonstrates how Omni is able to flip through information from Google Cloud, and let you manage your instances within their same consistent UI. This is fully configurable with OpenStack APIs to give customers maximum flexibility.

Paavan Shanbhag, Software Engineer, discusses managing Kubernetes with Platform9. This is designed to reduce the operation complexity of operating a cluster and cloud. Using their managed solution, Platform9 is able to greatly simplify deploying and managing a Kubernetes environment, and easily extend it into a hybrid cloud. Paavan particularly focuses on Cloud Bursting scenarios, when additional capacity is rapidly needed for additional demand.

Paavan Shanbhag, Software Engineer with Platform9, demonstrates cloud bursting with federated clusters. This includes a look at how Platform9’s managed Kubernetes environment handles added strain to the system, and a review of how the UI presents federated clusters and pods across providers. Paavan then walks through how local clusters can be extended to AWS or Google Container Engine to manage capacity and keep high availability.

Platform9 Fission and the Serverless Revolution

Platform9 Co-Founder and CTO Roopak Parikh discusses the revolution of serverless computing and how Platform9 Fission fits in. He first reviews the importance of Functions as a Service as the most recent shift in cloud computing. This focuses on single, short-lived functions without containers, allowing developers to simply focus on code, rather than operational aspects. This automatically scales economically within the serverless system. Platform9’s Fission platform started as a hackathon project, and now is in early alpha. Roopak runs down the use cases they see for the environment.
