Mist Announces New Wi-Fi 6 Access Points at Mobility Field Day 5

At Mobility Field Day, Mist Systems made a return presentation. The company is now part of Juniper Networks, and had a number of new additions to their AI-enabled access point portfolio. All of these APs support Wi-Fi 6 and come with the rich feature set included with 802.11ax. One of the things that really helps these APs stand out is a custom-built BLE antenna array, which is designed to give angle of arrival information for Bluetooth signals, letting Mist obtain more accurate location information.

Bad Behavior Analysis With Juniper Networks

It can be hard to determine what bad behavior looks like on a network. Signals are crowded and searching through the noise is time consuming. The industry has heard that AI is a possible solution, and it looks like this may be moving from hypothetical to reality very soon. Tom Hollingsworth takes a look at the way Juniper Networks is using AI to find bad actors before they can get what they’re after. He got to hear from Juniper at Security Field Day, be sure to checkout their full video presentation for all the details.

Fast Friday – Mobility Field Day 5 Edition

Tom Hollingswort has been organizing Mobility Field Day since the event started, and it’s great to see the discussions and presentations still get him excited. As he’s seen the mobility industry change over the last few years, there are a few things he keeps in mind. The physical realities of wireless are never magic, and require concrete planning to be successful. Analytics are great, but admins are still needed to deploy, fix, and enhance wireless networks. And don’t expect Wi-Fi 6E to roll out quickly. With all those things in mind, he’s excited to hear what the delegates thought of the event!

Cloud Application Mobility – The Hard Way

Moving applications from on-premises to the cloud isn’t easy, but at this point the challenges around it are generally understood. But in this post, Keith Townsend looks at the less looked at reverse of that process, moving a cloud application to on-prem. He found that Veeam showed off a perfect solution for this recently at Cloud Field Day. Using their Veeam for AWS solution, Keith was able to pull down an EC2 backup instance image after about 8-hours of work installing the solutions, backing up, and restoring the image, ultimately getting the workload back on-prem. This isn’t end of the process for Keith, but he found Veeam uniquely offered the capability in the first place.

Can We Back Up a PB?

In this post, Ray Lucchesi considers the conundrum of backing up a petabyte, something that conventional IT would say isn’t feasible. This would require scanning the numerous file systems within that PB, daily scanning the hundred of TB changes, then transferring all of that to the backup storage. Instead, organizations rely on costly replication to protect against outages. At Cloud Field Day, Ray heard how Igenous is doing this scale of backup today, using a unique engine to scan and index PB scale data repositories, while still providing admins visibility into what is backed up. Be sure to check out Ray’s post and Igneous’ entire presentation on our YouTube channel.

The “Not to Be a Jerk, But…” Mist #MDF5 Blog

Lee Badman wrote up his thoughts on Mist Systems, now an integral part of Juniper Networks. In Lee’s words in was a “marathon session”, and it took a hot minute to wrap his head around all the implications. The biggest thing that stood out was that Mist is no longer in a bubble of unique wireless solutions, having its AI methodology integrated into Juniper’s LAN solutions. He also was impressed to see Mist now offering a fully rounded out AP portfolio, something that was sorely lacking in previous sessions. Overall, Lee found it a really interesting presentation. Be sure to check it out on our YouTube channel to get all the details.

#MFD5 Day 1-Quick Recap

John Deegan knows how to enjoy a vacation, a full day of IT goodness at Mobility Field Day. In this post, he looks back at the presenters feature in day one of the event. From the day, he was saw Mist having an early leg up as it further expands its AI-based analytics in enterprise networks, even while introducing tools to make the traditional dashboard obsolete. Celona showed off how their CBRS tech stack has matured since the last time they presented, and John was excited to see endpoint hardware supporting the spectrum needed for it. The day was definitely full of quality presentations, and he was definitely hungry for the rest of the event.

Mobility Field Day 5: The “Morning Of”

In the lead up to Mobility Field Day, Lee Badman considered what he wanted to hear from the presenting companies overall during the course of the event. He was hoping the presenters kept their content focused on the delegates and the technology at hand. He also wanted them to keep their focus on concrete solutions they can provide customers, rather than promising features that will be included in the next big protocol around the bend. Finally, he wants to make sure the the presenters are showing the delegates useful implementation of APIs for their mobility platforms, rather than using it to obscure features and upsell. We’ll can’t wait to hear what Lee though of each presentation!

What Is the Future for Storage Admins?

Storage has changed rapidly over the past decade, and the role of the storage admin has changed along with it. Gina Rosenthal considers what the future of the storage admin looks like in this piece, based on what she saw at Storage Field Day. It says a lot about the state of storage that many companies traditionally thought of as storage providers are now presenting at the event. She looks at NetApp’s approach with the Cloud Volumes Service, on-premises scale-out systems from Dell Technologies’ PowerScale solution, Igneous’ data management platform built on a scale-out file system, and Qumulo’s file data platform. Even as storage changes and goes to the cloud, Gina thinks the skills that storage admins have built up are more needed than ever.

CFD8 – Igneous Followup

Nate Avery previously previewed what to expect from Igneous’ Cloud Field Day presentation, looking back at a 2016 Tech Field Day presentation to see how their messaging has changed since coming out of stealth. After hearing the company present at the event, he looks at their DataProtect solution, which enables enterprises to backup on-premises file data to a given cloud service provider. This hits all the major notes a solution like this requires, with a novel indexing scheme, full and incremental backups, tiering, and compression. He found everything they showed to be fast and fluid, but he thinks they are better positioned as a hybrid cloud backup provider, focused on one-way movement of data from on-prem to the cloud.
