Commvault Go 2017 – In Search of the Perfect Data Management Machine
In this post, Glenn Dekhayser breaks down the major announcements coming out of Commvault GO. This includes a look at their new HyperScale platform, their GlusterFS-backed, scalable, and fault tolerant back-end storage system. This can run on Commvault’s own hardware and software combination, or on a number of third-party hardware platforms. Notably, Cisco offers ScaleProtect, which puts HyperScale on their UCS platform.

Commvault UDI – a new CPUU
From Commvault GO, Chin-Fah Heoh shares his thoughts on one of the shows central tenants, that IT is now centered around data technology. From what he saw, Chin-Fah believes the Commvault Universal Dynamic Index should become a core component of Central Protection Universal Units to manage data across organizations. This is a demonstration of Commvault’s emphasis on powerful simplicity.

Commentary: Infrastructure Considerations for Machine Learning
In this post, Dr. Rachel Traylor looks at machine learning in the enterprise. The issue is machine learning takes vast swaths of varied data to produce useful results, something that might constrain a production database. Dr. Traylor looks at the Sky Infrastructure Actifio presented at Tech Field Day in September as a possible solution. This saves a “golden copy” of data, with changes saved incrementally, and able to serve up “virtual copies” much more efficiently for testing.

Larry Smith Jr. takes a look at the open source initiatives from NetApp, as presented at Tech Field Day earlier this year. This reflects a change in focus from the company. Previously seen as a pure storage company, their embrace of open source and DevOps culture through thePub marks a decidedly different company. Larry was particularly impressed by their NetApp Docker Volume Plugin, moving into the world of container storage management.

Daniel Kuchenski reviews what he saw from Pluribus Networks at Networking Field Day in September. He focuses on their Netvisor OS and the possibilities it opens for whitebox hardware. Overall he found it a very flexible solution, with robust management and network virtualization capabilities.

Pluribus Networks Is the Definition of “Software Defined”
Tom Hollingsworth looks at how the value of software-defined networking can drive your network forward with Pluribus Networks. For Tom, SDN is about making the hardware less important than what running on top of it. Pluribus showed how their SDN platform can still provide differentiation on newer hardware.

E Tu Pluribus Networks UNUM?
Pluribus Network gave a brief overview of their analytics platform at last month’s Networking Field Day. Rich Stroffolino was impressed that this capability is baked in at the kernel level, which allows for enabling the analytics services without sacrificing performance.

Commvault GO is right around the corner, and Chin-Fah Heoh can’t wait to attend. In this post, Chin-Fah runs through his personal history with the company, going as far back as 2001. He then outlines why the company has been successful in the backup and recovery space, with a long track record of innovation.
