Why Docker is finally embracing Kubernetes

Keith Townsend looks at the implications of one of the biggest announcements from DockerCon Europe 2017, the inclusion of Kubernetes with Docker Enterprise Edition. Since launching, Docker has been developer focused, but often lacked management tools to manage workloads at scale. As the industry has converged on Kubernetes as an orchestrator, Keith looks at how Docker can still differentiate by including in in Docker EE.

The challenge of doing data management at scale

Ahead of being a delegate at Tech Field Day Exclusive at Commvault GO 2017, Max Mortillaro looks at problems of data management. This centers around the creation of isolated data silos, which Max refers to as data archipelagos. These may simplify some operational considerations, but also inherently cause sprawl and overall inefficiency of resources. However the opposite, the dream of a global namespace is often impossible due to regulatory and data sovereignty requirements. In this light, Max considers if data management isn’t a necessary evil, but a business enabler to bridge these two extremes into something more functional.

NetApp at DockerCon – What’s that about then?

For Ian Sanderson, he thought of NetApp as just another storage vendor. After seeing their Tech Field Day Extra presentation from DockerCon EU, he’s definitely changed his tune! He was impressed with the company’s efforts to fully support containers across their product portfolio, as well as putting in lots of open source code via The Pub.

MoSMB, Less Problems

MoSMB from Ryussi offers a proprietary SMB3 alternative to SAMBA for Linux and Unix systems. Rich Stroffolino looks at it’s feature set and why this may be the sweet spot for many NAS vendors looking for something more robust than SAMBA.

SNIA Hops on DePop with Hyperscalers

SNIA presented at Storage Field Day, discussing how hyperscalers are effecting the storage industry as a whole. These businesses command so much storage that they can exert direct feature requests to component makers due to their unique scale. Rich Stroffolino looks at the effects of low percentage tail latency on application performance, and the DePop standard that was developed to address it.

AOS Bridging Two Worlds

At Networking Field Day last month, Apstra showed off version 2.0 of AOS, with a focus on how the OS can be used by developers. Previously Apstra had focused on operation applications of AOS, but with this new persona developers are able to create sophisticated AOS application products for operators to use on the platform. In this piece, Apstra’s Jeremy Schulman makes the case that this allows for businesses to stay agile and help operations and develops stay in step across network functions.

Notes from Dockercon 2017 – Copenhagen

For Alex Ellis, DockerCon Europe 2017 was well worth some expensive Copenhagen coffee. The big announcement from the show was that Docker Enterprise Edition will now be bundled with Kubernetes. He also enjoyed talking with various Docker Captains, as well as presenting on OpenFaaS at a Tech Field Day Extra presentation.

InfiniBox: solving the enterprise storage cost vs performance equation?

Infinidat will be presenting at Storage Field Day next year, but Max Mortillaro has an extensive preview of the company out now. He gives an overview of their software-defined storage solution, InfiniBox. Max sees it as an interesting solution for primary storage than offer petabyte-scale solution, high availability, and efficient caching without the expense of an AFA.

Understanding Serverless Computing

Serverless computing doesn’t mean there are no servers involved. Instead, as Keith Townsend explains in this post, it abstracts the infrastructure away from a developer, letting them focus on code not on what it will run on. He further explains how this leads to more efficient consumption of cloud resources, which are only used when a function is called.

Automated Testing & Intent Verification for Network Operations

Jason Edelman considers why networks often lack the robust testing tools that are the bedrock of software development. He recently saw a solution from Veriflow at Networking Field Day that might move networking closer to having better preemptive testing. They offer built in consistency and intent-based checks to define the state of the network and when something appears out of compliance. He also likes that their platform exposes all of this functionality via a RESTful API.

DataCore Divides & Conquers to Increase SQL Server Performance

DataCore Software’s newly released MaxParallel for SQL Server offers an interesting IO optimization feature to help prevent bottlenecks. Matt Crape thinks the solution has some interesting application for distributing an otherwise heavy workload to make it more manageable. He’s interested in learning more about it in the future and getting into the weeds on how it works.

Apstra: Networking by Intent

Pete Welcher got to see more from Apstra at last month’s Networking Field Day. The company is pushing back on other companies jumping on the intent-based networking bandwagon, calling it “intent washing”. Pete remains impressed that the company clearly defines what they mean by intent, remain firmly hardware agnostic, and approaching their intent fabric as a single managed entity. This presentation focused on how developers can use Apstra’s intent-based features, which impressed Pete with the versatility for a number of different network roles.
