What is Redfish?

Andrea Mauro wrote up on explainer of Redfish, the open industry standard specification, API and schema that specifies RESTful interface and utilizes JSON and Data. He highlights why it’s designed to supplant the Intelligent Platform Management Interface due to its extensive support of scripting languages and RESTful APIs. He sees it as mature enough to replace IPMI or proprietary solutions like Dell’s iDRAC.

#TFD16 Wrap Up: How the OpenManage Team Met 12 IT Bloggers…

Dell EMC’s OpenManage team presented at Tech Field Day a few weeks ago. In this piece, Dell EMC’s Jeremy Erwin shares some of the video segments from their session, as well as highlights some of the great conversation between our delegates and the company.

What Next for XtremIO?

Chris Evans heard from Dell EMC’s XtremIO team at Storage Field Day late last year. In this post, he digs into the history of the platform, discussing how their X2 release addressed customer concerns and added better compression from the initial XtremIO X1 solution. Dell EMC is committed to supporting XtremIO long term, but Chris discusses where exactly the solution fits in the modern enterprise.

XtremIO X2: easier scaling, fewer cables and metadata aware replication

After seeing Dell EMC’s presentation at Storage Field Day last year, Jon Klaus shares his thoughts on their XtremIO X2 storage array. Jon sees several interesting features compared to its predecessor. Among other features, Jon liked the improved flexibility when scaling storage, including offering XtremIO X2 Bricks with only partially populated disks. This makes it easier for new customers to adopt. XtremIO X2 also offers improved 5:1 data reduction, which can be achieved without a performance penalty due to its “inline everything” architecture.

VMAX All Flash: Enterprise reliability and SRDF at <1ms latency

Jon Klaus gives an overview of Dell EMC’s all flash VMAX storage array, which he saw at Storage Field Day earlier this year. This brings sub 1ms latency and high IOPS to the already reliable line.

Four Platforms When One Will Do?

After getting a review of their mid-range storage offerings at Storage Field Day last month, Chris Evans tries to makes sense of Dell EMC’s portfolio. This includes the SC-series, Unity, VNX and EqualLogic. The last two will be phased out as the result of the Dell EMC merger. Chris breaks down the rationale behind keeping two distinct mid-range lines, highlighting major differentiation like file protocols and deduplication support.

Storage Field Day 14

If you missed last month’s Storage Field Day, Barry Coombs has a post to get you caught up on most of the presentations. He includes his morning videos recorded at the event, going over his thoughts on what he saw the day prior. He also includes his excellent doodles for each presentations. These include notes on each company, as well as photos and screen shots. For a full audio-visual catch up on Storage Field Day, Barry has you covered.

vMax to the Max

Dell EMC went into a technical deep dive on VMAX during their presentation at Storage Field Day earlier this year. Erik Ableson looks at their recently released all-flash VMAX, and considers the current state of “big iron” and how something like VMAX fits into the world of the modern storage admin.

VMAX – The Mainframe of Storage

In this piece, Chris Evans compares Dell EMC’s VMAX storage array to classic mainframe computing. This may sound like a backhanded compliment, but is actually astute praise. Like the mainframe, VMAX caters to legacy applications that need industry leading high availability and performance. In that niche, the new All-Flash VMAX array performs excellent, and Chris would recommend for the right legacy workloads.

Dell-EMC VMAX All Flash Review

At Storage Field Day last week, the delegates got to see presentations from a number of Dell EMC divisions, including an update on their flagship VMAX All Flash array. René van den Bedem thinks the platforms long legacy of high performance and availability makes it a no-brainer for organizations that need five 9s or greater availability on a 3-tier storage platform .

DellEMC SC progressing well

At Storage Field Day, Chin-Fah Heoh and the other delegates got a look at Dell EMC’s SC series midrange storage arrays, which came out of the company’s acquisition of Compellent back in 2010. The presentation highlighted the arrays RAID Tiering and All-Flash SC hardware lineup.

Storage Field Day 14 coming up

Storage Field Day is coming up later this week, and Erik Ableson has a full preview. He’ll be attending Commvault Go before the event, hearing about their latest data management solutions. Then at Storage Field Day, he’ll get updates from Dell EMC across their vast portfolio, E8 Storage, and Scality. It should be a busy week, with many fascinating solutions on tap.

Dell EMC XtremIO At Storage Field Day 2017

Dell EMC CTO for ExtremIO Itzik Reich previews the company’s presentation at Storage Field Day next month. Make sure to mark your calendar, Dell EMC will be presenting across two days of the event.

Storage Field Day 14 Preview: EMC

Chris Evans will be at Storage Field Day next month and he has a preview up looking at what to expect from Dell EMC. He takes a look at the company’s diverse portfolio of storage options, and hopes to get some clarity on how Dell EMC will better unify their midrange offerings at the event.

Back to SFO for Storage Field Day 14! – FastStorage

Storage Field Day is coming up next month, and we’re happy to have the inimitable Jon Klaus returning! Returning for his seventh Storage Field Day, expect plenty of probing questions, quality analysis and stroopwafels from Jon as he sees presentations from Dell EMC, E8 Storage, and Scality.

I will be at Commvault Go and Storage Field Day 14!

Max Mortillaro will be back for a pair of events in November. He’s excited to attend Tech Field Day Exclusive at Commvault GO as well as attending Storage Field Day. He’s looking forward to a deep dives from Commvault, various Dell EMC divisions, comparing storage approaches from E8 Storage and Infinidat, and getting deep into object storage from Scality. It’ll be a busy month for Max!

Cloudified Snapshots done two ways

Mark May shares his thoughts on what he saw from Dell EMC at Storage Field Day in June. He particularly focuses on their Unity storage array and how it integrates with their Cloud Tier appliance. This allows for moving data from the storage array into the public cloud. Mark really likes the ability to take snapshots of Unity, but writing the data to S3 storage.

He compares this to Pure Storage’s approach, which he saw at a Storage Field Day Exclusive event at Pure Accelerate. Pure allows you to write snapshots to AWS in its native format, as opposed to converting it to an object store. Both are interesting approaches to extending storage arrays into the cloud.

Does Cloud Provide Infinite Storage Capacity and Retention?

Based on Dell EMC’s presentation on Unity at Storage Field Day, Alex Galbraith poses the question: “Does Cloud Provide Infinite Storage Capacity and Retention?”
