Convergence Without Compromise

Josh De Jong takes a look at an interesting approach to hyperconverged infrastructure from Datrium with DVX. Their approach separates compute nodes from storage. Each compute node has a SSD used for cachining, which results in increased performance when adding nodes. Josh looks of Datrium is now developing how to move their HCI stack to the cloud.

The Challenge of Scale

Josh De Jong go his idea of scale adjusted after hearing Dropbox present at Storage Field Day. In his previous SMB experience, 20-30TB had been a large amount of storage. Moving into the enterprise, multiple petabytes became more of the norm. But at Dropbox, they referred to 30PB as a “toy system.” Josh overviews many of the problems and solutions Dropbox showed to operate at such scale.

An Interview with Josh @EuroBrew at #TFD13

At Tech Field Day earlier this month, Alastair Cooke managed to steal a few minutes with Josh De Jong for a quick interview. They talk about how to approach learning throughout the changing technological landscape of IT. This is made more important by the fact that the cost of traditional training is often hard to come by when working for SMBs. It’s a really great conversation and food for thought for any IT professional.

Cohesity – DataPlatform in the Cloud

Josh De Jong takes a look at what Cohesity presented at Tech Field Day. While still a relatively new company, Josh thinks they have an interesting solution for secondary storage. This includes not just backup, but all data that isn’t in active production. Cohesity can eliminate a lot of storage bottlenecks by moving test/dev instances off of primary storage, and use their SSD based cache to speed up the process. Josh also liked Cohesity’s DataPlatform CE, which can back up your VMs in cloud native formats. Overall, while not all of their feautures are novel to the platform, they seem to have a robust solution for secondary storage.
