Juniper Acquires 128 Technology to Add User-Centric Data
Frequent Tech Field Day presenter Juniper Networks announced in October that they would be acquiring 128 Technology. Writing for eWeek, Zeus Kerravala says that “the acquisition of 128 Technology will bring application data into Mist that will add another layer of intelligence.” We’re excited to see Juniper’s growth and look forward to seeing them at more Tech Field Day events soon!
Network Field Day 23 Overview, or Throw Out Your Net Management Tools, They’re Obsolete!
There is a network management revolution going on, and legacy systems are no longer going to cut it. Airvine, Apstra, Arista, Boradcom, Catchpoint, Cisco, Intel, IP Fabric, Juniper Networks and PathSolutions came together at Network Field Day 23 to showcase how each of their products is making waves in the network management space. Peter Welcher, Network Field Day 23 delegate and tech expert came to the conclusion that it is time to modernize company’s network management tools, or die, based on what he saw at the event.
Mist Is the New Edge
Tom Hollingsworth had the chance to see Mist present at Mobility Field Day this past July. He writes that since being acquired by Juniper Networks, both Juniper and Mist have grown and gone through an incredible transformation. That has led to Mist being on the cutting edge of utilizing AI to change the way we do networking. Looking Forward to Network Field Day 23
Pete Welcher posted about our September Networking Field Day event over on LinkedIn. He’s looking forward to the event overall, but the highlight of this article are his thoughts about the presenting companies. He mentions Arista, Cisco, Juniper Networks, and Palo Alto, which he calls “four of the top five” networking companies. He’s also keen on seeing Apstra, Broadcom, Catchpoint, Intel, PathSolutions, and VMware, though the latter is not able to present at this event this time.

As a delegate at Mobility Field Day, Dave Benham saw presentations by Mist Systems and was intrigued by their Proximity Tracing system and its potential impact on Contact Tracing and limiting the spread of COVID-19. Dave writes that the applications of their new systems are significant for contract tracers because the it gives organizations the potential ability track where infected individuals have been in a specific facility and identify what areas might need a deep cleaning. This tracking has the possibility to provide users with increased information and help increase the safety of people utilizing a given space. Mist Announces New Wi-Fi 6 Access Points at Mobility Field Day 5
At Mobility Field Day, Mist Systems made a return presentation. The company is now part of Juniper Networks, and had a number of new additions to their AI-enabled access point portfolio. All of these APs support Wi-Fi 6 and come with the rich feature set included with 802.11ax. One of the things that really helps these APs stand out is a custom-built BLE antenna array, which is designed to give angle of arrival information for Bluetooth signals, letting Mist obtain more accurate location information.
Bad Behavior Analysis With Juniper Networks
It can be hard to determine what bad behavior looks like on a network. Signals are crowded and searching through the noise is time consuming. The industry has heard that AI is a possible solution, and it looks like this may be moving from hypothetical to reality very soon. John Deegan knows how to enjoy a vacation, a full day of IT goodness at Mobility Field Day. In this post, he looks back at the presenters feature in day one of the event. From the day, he was saw Mist having an early leg up as it further expands its AI-based analytics in enterprise networks, even while introducing tools to make the traditional dashboard obsolete. Celona showed off how their CBRS tech stack has matured since the last time they presented, and John was excited to see endpoint hardware supporting the spectrum needed for it. The day was definitely full of quality presentations, and he was definitely hungry for the rest of the event.
Coffee Hour – Mobility Field Day 5
Rowell Dionicio and François Vergès over at the Clear to Send podcast recently previewed what to expect at Mobility Field Day. They were particularly interested to see VMware as a presenting company and can’t wait to hear what they’ll be discussing. They also look at some of the delegates attending to the event, note the increased importance of wireless security within the voices around the table, and how the virtual event is changing who can be a delegate.
Juniper’s Active Network Defence Concept
Juniper Networks went into detail about their Advanced Threat Protection at Security Field Day. For Justin Warren, it took a little bit to start digging into what Juniper was showing, eventually understanding their machine-learning based threat detection approach. Justin sees this as potentially effective, but having to overcome a lot of negative preconceptions, dependent on making sure the system is smart enough at detection to be a tool rather than an annoyance to avoid. A lot of the success of Juniper’s Advanced Threat Protection will depend on organizations laying the groundwork to work well with it, something that Justin doesn’t think is commonly the case. That being said, he thinks the approach and overall goal are sound, and that perhaps organizations need lofty goals to reach for to ultimately get better.
“Hey Juniper, How’s the Security State of My Network?”
In this post, Pieter-Jan Nefkens looks at how Juniper Networks is usingAI/ML on detecting anomalies or other weird behavior on your network. Based on what he saw at Security Field Day, this can help you a lot in gaining more visibility and control in your network. Pieter sees these kind of tools as vital for spotting odd one-off behavior that might go unnoticed, but could have big security implications. Ultimately these are tools to help admins sort through ever increasing loads of data. He’s aware that they aren’t perfect, and that human review of findings is probably still warranted for some time, but he likes what he saw from Juniper.

Tom Hollingsworth takes a look at Juniper Networks Contrail Insights and how it can help you make sure you’re automating the right things. Juniper did a deep dive on Contrail Insights at Networking Field Day, showing how a journey to automation is a matter steps. For Tom, Contrail Insights might not be the most exciting step in that journey, but arguably one of the most important.
Mist a Refreshing Experience When You Need a Support Case
Haydn Andrews got his hands on a Mist AP43 during Mobility Field Day last summer, and just found time to run it through its wireless paces. In his initial testing, Haydn found the setup process to be incredibly easy. When he did run into some issues and questions while trying to do some advanced configuration, he was even more impressed by the support system at Mist Systems. Instead of having to send all sorts of log and license information over to the support team, they got him answers to his questions within a few minutes. It was a refreshing change of pace for what is considered standard in much of the industry.

Jake’s been skeptical about uses of AI and ML in the enterprise, but was impressed with what he saw from Mist. They were able to identifty a missing VLAN relatively, without requiring extensive training of individual models.
