Chin-Fah Heoh got to thinking about the current crop of HCI solutions. He thought of how companies like NetApp and Datrium have architectures that provide discrete data and compute nodes. But after seeing the presentation from DriveScale at Tech Field Day this month, disaggregation may actually prove to be more important for organizations. Their approach allows for assembling storage, compute and networking resources into virtual clusters, composing them as needed. Chin-Fah needs to dig deeper into their solution, but was fascinated at the prospect.
NetApp Data Fabric: putting in practice the “Theory of Everything” for Data and Storage
Max Mortillaro was along as a delegate for Tech Field Day Extra at NetApp Insight 2018 last week. He got to hear about the latest with NetApp Data Fabric, which Max sees as a major breakthrough in how organizations manage data. Data Fabric takes full control of storage infrastructure, abstracting it at the data level, where it can then offer extremely granular services. With advanced features like Cloud Tiering and Kubernetes Integration, Max wonders if this even qualifies as a storage product. While he has concerns about cost, in the end, Max calls Data Fabric a “killer solution.”
NetApp’s Max Data at #NetAppInsight and #TFDx
At Tech Field Day Extra at NetApp Insight 2018, Matt Leib got to see the launch of NetApp Max Data. In this post, he traces the technology back to NetApp’s acquisition of Plexistor, who who saw at a Storage Field Day event back in 2016. This uses an embedded tiering architecture to allow onboard memory to hold entire databases. Matt likes that the architecture easily allows for expansion into newer “near” memory bus architectures, allowing for growth over time. For him, it’s just more evidance that today’s NetApp is far more than just a “Filer” company.
NetApp HCI Update
Chris Maki was a delegate at Tech Field Day Extra at NetApp Insight 2018. At the event, he got a deep dive into a number of NetApp announcements, including an update to their HCI offerings. In this post, Chris outlines some of the new hardware available, including new compute nodes, GPU accelerators, and networking.
NETAPP INSIGHT 2018 – TFDX- Data Fabric 2.0

With Data Fabric 2.0, NetApp is now able to offer management & monitoring, orchestrations, data services, and data storage across clouds.
NETAPP INSIGHT 2018 – TFDX- MAX Data
Roger Lund provides some updates that he saw at Tech Field Day Extra at NetApp Insight 2018. In this post, he focuses on NetApp MAX Data. This comes out of their recent Plexistor acquisition, and offers data management services for persistent memory. NetApp sees this as optimized for workloads in real-time analytics, in-memory DBs, AI, and data warehouses.
Netapp Insight 2018 – TFDx- HCI Revealed! Hyper Converged or Hybrid Cloud?
Roger Lund was at NetApp Insight as a delegate for Tech Field Day Extra presentation. At the event, he got a deep dive into NetApp’s HCI solutions. NetApp has gone to great lengths to define specifically what their intent is behind developing HCI, designed around solving actual customer challenges. Roger reviews the features and how it fits into the company’s overall Data Fabric vision.
NetApp Insight 2018 – Hello Stranger, We Meet Again
Max Mortillaro is coming to Tech Field Day Extra at NetApp Insight 2018. He’s hoping to reconnect with a company he’s hasn’t directly worked with. On the eve of 2019, he thinks the company’s transformation is more than just PR, and seems to represent substantive change. He’s excited to get more details during the Tech Field Day Extra presentations.
NetApp Provides Insights for Women in Tech
Ahead of NetApp Insight 2018, Rich Stroffolino previews what should be one of the more interesting session at the event, the Women In Technology Panel. Now in its sixth annual iteration, this session brings together women from NetApp and other prominent IT companies to discuss the topic.
NetApp Speaks Volumes
Rich Stroffolino looks forward to NetApp Insight, looking at how the company has continued their transition from a storage company to a data company. Part of this strategy comes from Cloud Volumes, and the newly announced NetApp Kubernetes Service.
NetApp Acquires StackPointCloud
Rich Stroffolino outlines how NetApp’s recent acquisition of StackPointCloud compliments what they presented at Cloud Field Day earlier this year. Their Cloud Volumes service now naturally rolls into a larger managed Kubernetes play.
Cloud Storage – AWS, Azure, and Beyond
Ned Bellavance and Stephen Foskett break down the cloud storage options from AWS and Microsoft Azure. They then illustrate why the cacophony of choice from just those two providers make it almost impossible to do a true comparison of either performance or value. They see something like NetApp’s Cloud Volumes, which they saw at Cloud Field Day earlier this year, as a way to approach some consistency in the marketplace.
Multi-Cloud, DevOps, and Storage
From the presentation from NetApp at Cloud Field Day earlier this year, Ned Bellavance and Stephen Foskett wrote an in-depth article looking at the challenges of applying DevOps concepts to storage, especially in a multi-cloud environment. NetApp addressed this challenge with Cloud Volumes, which they see as providing the flexibility demanded by DevOps without sacrificing the functionality of robust data services.
3D XPoint Is At A Crossroads – Can Intel and Micron Deliver?
With the announcement that Intel and Micron are dissolving their partnership, Stephen Foskett says that their joint 3D XPoint technology is at a crossroads. So far 3D XPoint has been over-promised and underperforming, but Stephen says the product shows some promise in the enterprise, citing NetApp’s Storage Field Day 16 presentation and discussions at Dell Technologies World.
NetApp OnCommand Insight
Brandon Graves talks NetApp’s OnCommand Insight, the only analytics and monitoring tool presented at Storage Field Day 16. OCI is always watching your environment and can be set up to notify the correct team when a problem arises. He also mentions NetApp’s Cloud Insights, a product that adds many features on top of OCI for use in the modern hybrid data center, meaning it can monitor what is happening on-premises, as well as in the cloud.
Cloud Proximate Data Storage
Matt Leib talks about what he calls Cloud Proximate Data Storage, where major storage vendors leverage locationally close datacenters to mitigate the cost of moving data. Matt goes on to discuss the solutions presented at Storage Field Day 16 as well as PureAccelerate such as Infinidat’s Neutrix, products from PureStorage, and HPE’s Cloud Volumes/CloudBank.
NetApp – OnCommand Insight
Michael Cade talks NetApp’s OnCommand Insight in his recent coverage of Storage Field Day 16. Although OCI’s ability to have no agents but still provide massive scale regardless of where the endpoint is placed as well as provide visibility into your whole environment excite Michael he is still not convinced OCI is a product for the masses due to its price.
NetApp – Cloud Insights
Michael Cade reviews NetApp’s Cloud Insights as presented at Storage Field Day 16. With three main goals in mind, reducing MTTR, reducing cloud infrastructure costs, and preventing further issues, Cloud Insights as a SaaS offering greatly interests Michael and he looks forward to seeing where the product goes in the future.
NetApp OCI and Cloud Insight
Renè van den Bedem recalls NetApp’s Storage Field Day 16 presentation on their OnCommand Insight and Cloud Insight SaaS offerings. He goes over the use cases for both products and recommends OCI for cases where you might need to quickly implement a chargeback solution.
NetApp Addresses key Analytics to the #SFD16 audience
Matt Leib recalls NetApp’s presentation about OnCommand Insight from Storage Field Day 16. Matt sees OCI as a very interesting approach toward the monitoring and troubleshooting of NetApp environments.
