Miscreants in Action: Edge Computing (Or Something)

John Osman recaps his experience as a delegate at Edge Field Day. Despite engaging discussions and presentations from Solidigm, StorMagic, and NodeWeaver, he admits to remaining unclear on the precise definition of Edge Computing, expressing that it may be too vast and varied to reduce to a strict definition. Ultimately, the author settles on the understanding of Edge Computing as an optimization strategy that involves distributed computing, recognizing the breadth of its applications.

Exciting Innovation Is Happening at the Edge

Brian Knudtson emphasizes the growing innovation within the Edge sector of the IT industry, illustrated by the advancements showcased at Edge Field Day 2. Companies like Solidigm, StorMagic and NodeWeaver are developing impressive solutions for storage and deployment at the Edge, each with their unique approaches and functionalities. The author anticipates the lessons learned from the technological innovations for extreme use cases at the Edge will eventually influence the core data center and cloud sectors.

Controlling Far-Flung Edges: StorMagic Edge Control

Jim Czuprynski introduces StorMagic’s new tool, Edge Control, a user-friendly and affordable solution for managing and configuring storage and hardware in edge computing environments. The tool stands out for its straightforward UI, allowing easy identification, configuration, and updating of storage devices, VMs, and other hardware. He encourages readers to check out the provided video links for a closer look at Edge Control’s capabilities.

Navigating Data Security at the Edge

Security is one of the most debated areas in edge computing. In this delegate roundtable recorded at the recent Edge Field Day event, the panel uncovers the risks and security limitations of edge sites. Watch the roundtable or read the article at Gestalt IT that talks about navigating these risks.

Edge of Tomorrow: Tech Field Day EFD #2

Reflecting on his experience as a delegate for Gestalt IT’s Edge Field Day event, Jim Czuprynski speaks to the exponential evolution of edge computing. Three vendors presented diverse solutions to edge computing challenges, with key topics including growing analytics at the edge, maintaining communication between nodes in small-scale settings, and managing edge computing devices. The firsthand experience at the event offered plentiful insights into the realities and future prospects of edge computing technologies.

Building Future-Ready Micro-Datacenters at the Edge With StorMagic SvSAN

Edge sites of small and medium businesses are in need reinforcement. To make them adaptable to the emerging trends and growing demands, StorMagic presents SvSAN. A virtual SAN solution, SvSAN provides small outfits a specialized edge infrastructure that is resilient and powerful, yet low-cost. Watch HPE and StorMagic demo it live at the recent Edge Field Day event, or read about it at Gestalt IT.

The Present and Future of Edge at Edge Field Day 2

The second Edge Field Day, scheduled for October 4th and 5th, will feature presentations from StorMagic and HPE, NodeWeaver, and Solidigm. The event, which will stream live on LinkedIn and the Tech Field Day website, kicks off with a delegate roundtable discussion on the latest developments in Edge Computing, followed by various presentations touching on high-density storage, AI inferencing, and zero-touch provisioning. To engage with the event, view it live or watch recorded sessions on the Tech Field Day YouTube channel, and follow the conversation on LinkedIn or X/Twitter using #EFD2.

StorMagic’s SvSAN – Targeting HCI’s ROBO Sweet Spot

StorMagic presented at Tech Field Day back in February. Here, Howard Marks reviews how their SvSAN delivers hyper converged infrastructure for remote and branch office environments as well as how their unique approach to software-defined storage is designed to keep costs low while improving performance and maintaining highly available clusters.

Sans SAN with StorMagic

Rich Stroffolino writes up his thoughts about StorMagic’s SvSAN solution. He sees it as an interesting way to bring enterprise class storage to sites that might not have a heavy volume of data, but need high availability and redundancy in a pure software package.

StorMagic SvSAN – Scalable Virtual HA Storage for the Masses

Sean Thulin looks at StorMagic’s SvSAN solution, as seen at Tech Field Day earlier this month. As a virtual storage solution that sits inside your existing VM infrastructure, it’s already interesting. But Sean thought SvSAN really shined by being extremely lightweight, requiring only 1 vCPU, 1GB of RAM and only 2 nodes initially. It can also be used to help protect against large scale location failures, with mirroring that can operate on low bandwidth and even the most humble hardware requirements. StorMagic looks to have a solution that’s powerful but only needs lightweight requirements.

Deploy StorMagic datastore with vCenter

Andrea Mauro gives a walkthrough on how to setup a shared datastore from previously deployed VSAs. He does this via the StorMagic integration plugin. There are more than a few steps, but Andrea makes the walkthrough easy to follow. This may take a few minutes to setup, but once done, you’ll have shared storage usable as a normal vSphere block datastore.

Deploy StorMagic VSA with vCenter

StorMagic presented at Tech Field Day last week. Andrea Mauro was one of the invited delegates, and before the event, he wrote a series of posts about their solution. In this one, we walks through deploying a StorMagic VSA directly from vCenter. To see what they announced at Tech Field Day, be sure to check out our full video coverage.

StorMagic virtual SAN solution for vSphere and MS Hyper-V

StorMagic will be presenting at Tech Field Day in Austin, coming up in February. Andreas Lesslhumer gives a look to their virtual SAN solution. This gives small and medium-sized enterprises the ability to get high-end features at an attainable price. StorMagic’s software works with two or more commodity servers to provide a high availability virtual SAN to your vSphere of Hyper-V environment. We’re looking forward to learning more from StorMagic during their TFD presentation!

Back to Tech Field Day

Andrea Mauro is heading to Tech Field Day in Austin, coming up February 1st. He give a little context for his own involvements with past events, including some Virtualization Field Days and Tech Field Day Extras, but this is his first full Tech Field Day. He gives a rundown of his impressions of the presenting companies, but overall is excited to meet with other delegates, and to get into the technical deep dives. We’re excited to have Andrea coming to Austin, and can’t wait to hear his impressions of the presentations!

Tech Field Day 13 Preview: StorMagic

In the run up to Tech Field Day, starting February 1st, Thom Greene has been doing some great preview posts. In his latest, he gives a look at StorMagic. In the crowded software defined storage field, Thom sees StorMagic differentiating in meaningful ways. For one, they can run across multiple platforms, refreshing in the increasing hyperconverged world where there’s a lot of product lock-in. He also likes their support for high latency connections. He’s looking forward to finding out what’s new with the company at Tech Field Day!
