Patching insecure software is usually the right answer, right? So why do we argue against it so much? Tom Hollingsworth discusses lessons learned from VMware’s recent Security Field Day presentation and how we could all be a bit better about patching if we just act like pirates.
Cloudy With a Chance of APIs – Reflections From Tech Field Day 19
Tech Field Day is all about bringing together the different disciplines of the data center into a single event, bringing a diversity of views from both the presenting companies and invited delegates. Adam Fisher definitely go that experience at Tech Field Day last month. The event featured presentations from diverse topics as Robotic Process Automation to cloud visibility solutions. The unifying aspect of every company was the presence of some kind of public cloud integration into their solutions, and the availability of well documented APIs. It’s no surprise that these are dominant trends in IT, but surprising to see them on display from such a wide array of presenters.
VMware Cloud Automation Services: The Next Evolution in Multi-Cloud Automation
Wes Milliron attended his first Field Day event last month. It was great to see his write up of what VMware presented, which was featured on the last day of the event. They focused on their Cloud Automation Services Suite, which is a SaaS offering for multi-cloud management and automation. The tech definitely impressed the delegates. Wes liked that it allows VMware customers to embrace DevOps without locking them into specific tools. The videos from the presentation are definitely worth a watch.
VMware vRealize – Operations Without Operators
At Tech Field Day, VMware presented on their four tenants for self-driving operations: Continuous Performance Optimization, Efficient Capacity Management, Intelligent Remediation, and Integrated Compliance. Dan Frith looks at how these elements are integrated into vRealize Operations. For him, it was eye opening to see the capabilities, and reinforced the point that the solution is so much more than a glorified dashboard.
Shivering With Microsegmen……..tation
One of the things that struck Tricia Howard about Security Field Day was the preponderance of companies with solutions using microsegmentation. This isn’t a new solution in networking, but it is pretty new for security. The emphasis with these approaches was isolation as quickly as possible, quarantining endpoints to prevent further spread. These concepts were wrapped with an emphasis on speed and ease of deployment, otherwise they don’t get used. For Tricia, the next step is to get these solutions into your deployments to test them out.
Patch! Patch! Patch!
Jasper Bongertz enjoyed the messaging around VMware’s presentation at Security Field Day. They reminded everyone about the importance of patching, something in an age of continuing exploits certainly resonates. They went over some of their hardening guidelines, what they’ve done with CPU schedulers to reduce the threat of speculative attacks, and more.
Tech Field Day (#TFD19): A Heads-Up
Before heading to Tech Field Day this week, Ather Beg wrote up a little homework in this blog post. He gives an outline of what to expect from each presenter. For those watching along on the live stream or catching up on the video later, it’s a good one stop shop for background information. He’s got links to relevant material, as well as his own thoughts on the presenters.
Tech Field Day 19 – I’m on My Way!
Liselotte Foverskov is returning to Tech Field Day with our event next week. This time around, she’s looking to join in the conversation around the table a little bit more, we can’t wait! In this post, she gives a little preview of what she’s expecting from each of the presenters. We can’t wait to hear her thoughts after the event.
VMware on AWS VPC Route Table Example
At Cloud Field Day this month, Alex Neihaus got a deep dive into VMware’s AWS integration. When this was first announced in 2016, he saw it as two walled gardens put next to each other. After the event, he’s beginning to see some portholes getting put in to see to the other side. Alex saw the presentation as confirming that VMware fundamentally perceives AWS as a hardware platform for its hypervisor, rather than a virtualization platform. He has a lot of interesting takeaways, so be sure to read the whole piece.
NSX-T Is Transformative for the Future of VMware
At their recent Networking Field Day presentation, VMware went into detail about their recent NSX 2.4 release. For Tom Hollingsworth, the release adds a lot of notable features and signals where the company is going in the future. Going forward, all NSX development will be on NSX-T for modern infrastructure, rather than the traditional NSX-V. Tom notes this effectively marks the end of the vSphere-centric data center. Don’t let the version number fool you, this is VMware being aggressive to remain vital to modern IT.
Heading to Cloud Field Day 5
Chris Porter is at Cloud Field Day this week, a return appearance after being on hand for the event last year. He’s looking forward to hearing what all the presenters have in store, particularly Sysdig and Nginx given his background with containers. Rubrik will be a returning presenter for Chris. He also highlights what he’s interested in from Pure Storage, VMware and Veeam. The Cloud Field Day informational firehose can be intense, but it looks like Chris is up to the challenge again.
Cloud Field Day – VMware
Ned Bellavance is joining us as a delegate again at Cloud Field Day this week. He’s published a series of posts looking at each of the presenters, and in this one he casts his gaze toward VMware. Their presentation will focus on VMware on AWS, something Ned has been skeptical about since it launched. He still thinks its a viable, and in some cases appropriate, solution for some organizations. We’ll see if their presentation can change his mind.
Join Us for Cloud Field Day (#CFD5): VMware Cloud on AWS Unplugged
VMware is presenting this week at Cloud Field Day, and Sonali Desai has a post on their blog previewing what they’ll be discussing with the delegates. The presentation should provide a deep dive into VMware Cloud on AWS, with dedicated parts looking at compute, networking and storage. Tune in to get a deep dive along with some demos.
Join Us for Cloud Field Day (#CFD5): VMware Cloud on AWS Unplugged
VMware’s Sonali Desai gives a preview of what to expect from the company at Cloud Field Day next week. They’ll be giving a deep dive into VMware Cloud on AWS and how it can help accelerate hybrid cloud migration. We’ll be live streaming all the presentations from the event, so be sure to mark your calendar to watch them all!
Off the Cuff – NFD20 Wrap Up
From a rainy recording in Silicon Valley, Jordan Martin gathered together some fellow delegates from Networking Field Day to discuss what they heard at the event. They run down each presenter and discuss what stood out and struck their interest. Guests include Mario Gingras, Nick Shoemaker, Richard McIntosh, Brian Gleason, and Drew Conry-Murray.
BLOG – NFD20 – VMware – SDWAN
Rodrigo Rovere was a delegate at Networking Field Day last month, and got to hear the latest from VMware. The company focused on their SD-WAN portfolio, focusing on Velocloud. They showed how this can offer organizations not just easier networking across sites, but more security on top of it. This coordinated with NSX makes for a potent combination.
Network Break 222: SnapRoute Launches Network OS; Carbonite Buys Webroot
In this episode of Network Break, the podcast crew looks at SnapRoute’s CN-NOS Demonstration from Networking Field Day, which was previously profiled in their Briefings in Brief show as well. Be sure to give it a listen to get their take on the event.
Forget Day 0, Tell Me About Days 1-365!
Ken Nalbone wrote up an interesting post considering what he saw from VMware at Tech Field Day earlier this month. The company focused on how they can provide solutions for IT infrastructure beyond the travails of Day 0, into Day 1 and beyond. For Ken, this might not be the most exciting, but it’s probably more critical for organizations.
TechField Day 18 – Day 1 With Datera, NetApp and VMware
Ed Horley was one of the delegates that made his way down to Austin for Tech Field Day last week. The event had a full roster of prominent IT companies. In this post, Ed focuses on what he heard on day one of the event, with presentations from Datera, NetApp, and VMware. For him, the three companies showed varying approaches on how to differentiate their solutions based on how they are handling data analytics. These differences in approaches were illuminating in how each pitched their value to the delegates.
TFD18 Prep: VMware
Justin Warren is getting ready to head out to Tech Field Day in Austin later this week. Of course, he’s doing his homework before the presentations. In this piece, he’s looking at what to expect from VMware. They’ll be presenting on vSAN and particularly focusing on vSphere Health. As an Ops guy at heart with a long history with automation, there’s a lot to like with vSphere Health, even if its ideas aren’t exactly new. He’s interested to see how it handles being an advisory tool for automation versus something that remediates without constant interaction.
