2018 was a good and busy year ! Things I have done during the last year

Year in review posts are always a good time to take stock of accomplishments. Orhan Ergun took a look at 2018 and found he had a really busy year. For starters, he made the decision to open a company in Turkey. Other highlights included seeing students and friends pass their CCDE practical exam. In October, we were lucky to have Orhan attend Networking Field Day, where he got to hear from a variety of companies in the industry. We hope his 2019 is just as eventful!

It’s Been a Year, Where Is Open Locate Now?

HPE Aruba Networking’s Open Locate offers a significant opportunity to leverage the potential of location services across industries and establish business insights. The tech uses remote GPS anchor points to improve the accuracy of location data, which will enable its use in critical areas such as worker safety, inventory management and asset tracking. However, the use and sharing of the data need to take into account privacy matters and consider carefully how to extract and transform the data to provide meaningful business value. Troy Martin, who attended Aruba Atmosphere in 2022 and 2023, considers the impact of Open Locate after a year.

10 on Tech Episode 023 – Andrew Sullivan on Enabling Customers with Open Source

In this episode of the 10 on Tech podcast, James Green from ActualTechMedia interviews Andrew Sullivan and Brendan Wolfe of NetApp. They discuss why enterprise technology vendors invest in open source projects for the benefit of their customers, how strategic commitment from vendors to certain open source projects gives customers a sense of security, and NetApp’s “Trident” storage provisioner for Kubernetes.

CFD6 VMware API Questions

Larry Smith Jr is no stranger to Field Day events, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t love having him as a delegate at Cloud Field Day earlier this year. He brings his typical technical acumen and insight into this post, asking some key question on what he saw from VMware at the event. To date, Larry has not been a fan of VMware API implementation and documentation. Be sure sure to check out his post to see if this presentation changed his mind.

Year in Review – 2016

The year is rapidly winding down, and as 2016 comes to a close, Dustin Beare gives it a look back. It’s a year that found him welcome a new son into the world, attend Networking Field Day, get a promotion at work, and pass his CCIE written exam. It’s a really great look back at how in just a year, a lot of things can change. Dustin clearly put in a lot of hard work to change the course of his career. It was a pleasure to have him as a delegate.

Storage Field Day 15: The open convergence by Datrium

Datrium presented at Storage Field Day last month. Lino Telera got to hear about their concept of Open Convergence. This bucks the trend of traditional HCI, offering a different model for delivering tier-1 and secondary data in a scalable solution. They do this with an architecture build around stateless compute nodes and stateful storage nodes. This provides less cross talk between nodes, and allows for truly remarkable scale, as Lino saw during their presentation.

How VMware Marketplace Makes Simple to Deploy Vendors and Open Source Solutions

Raff Poltronieri joined us for his 7th full Field Day event with Cloud Field Day. At the event, he heard from VMware’s Product Marketing & Strategy Manager Nee Palaka, who led a deep dive on the VMware Marketplace. Raff really liked the potential of VMware Marketplace, which lets vendors reach VMware’s customer base, and also provides an opportunity for customers to use and install third party solutions plus open source products inside their VMware environments. He sees three main use cases for Marketplace, simplifying moving customers to the cloud, maximizing their investment in VMware’s platform, and ensuring developer flexibility.

Ending Wireless Eavesdropping With Wi-Fi Enhanced Open and Cisco

Ever wonder how secure public WiFi networks are? Writing for GesaltIT.com, Tom Hollingsworth focuses on how Mobility Field Day presenter Cisco is combatting security concerns on publicly available WiFi networks including with their “Wi-Fi Enhanced Open” offering. Next time you’re using your coffee shop internet, remember that Cisco is working to make your connection that little bit more secure.

Datrium And Open Convergence

Rich Stroffolino wrote up his thoughts on Datrium’s presentation from Tech Field Day. The company has an interesting response to the typical hyperconverged infrastructure story, something they call Open Convergence with their DVX Rackscale architecture. This allows for heterogeneous deployments of Datrium’s own nodes and existing hardware. More importantly, Datrium’s architecture separates nodes for mass storage and those for compute. This allows for servers to be stateless, easier management, and less cross-talk between nodes. It’s a very interesting rethink of how to approach convergence.

SPEP03 – TFD12 | Open TechCast

At Tech Field Day earlier this month, a number of our delegates and staff got to sit in on the Open TechCast. Give it a listen to hear Alex Galbraith get the latest takes from Stephen Foskett, Matt Crape, and Mike Preston!

Why Do Technology Vendors Invest In Open Source?

James Green looks at the motivations behind companies investing in open source projects. NetApp has made major strides in this over the past 18-months, and presented extensively on it at Tech Field Day.

097: GreyBeards Talk Open Source S3 Object Store With AB Periasamy, CEO MinIO

Keith Townsend and Ray Lucchesi published an interview with MinIO CEO Anand Babu Periasamy. Ray got to hear from him and the rest of the MinIO team recently at Storage Field Day. MinIO offers a fully open source AWS S3 compatible object store that you can run anywhere, something particularly timely as more organizations turn to them. This allows customers to turn away from costly cloud object stores, and deploy in their own data centers for better economics at scale. They discuss how the company is developing features to match Amazon S3, and dig into the tech in the interview.

Mojo Networks: Driving Value With Open Hardware Standards

Jake Snyder sees Mojo Networks going in the right direction with their open hardware approach at their Mobility Field Day presentation, saying, “wireless access is not enough. You have to do more to show value.” He was impressed by CEO Rick Wilmer’s opening presentation, setting the stage for Mojo to show the ways in which they differentiate themselves with their cloud management, machine learning and wireless security.
