Google Cloud VMware Engine (GVE) Brings Native VMware to Google Cloud Platform
At Tech Field Day, Google Cloud highlighted Google VMware Engine (GVE), a subscription-based service offering that brings VMware to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Google Cloud VMware Engine (GVE) comes to the market to help enterprises migrate, extend, and enhance their VMware workloads using Google Cloud. Dedicated, hyperconverged hardware comes with many benefits, including guaranteed performance, and simplified security and compliance. But, one of the key differentiators is that unlike many cloud offerings, GVE comes with the freedom to install and configure third-party software so that businesses can migrate their workloads without disrupting their existing tooling.

Fixing Firewall Sizing Issues With Prosmio
Tom Hollingsworth sheds light on the challenges of deploying an appropriately sized firewall and highlights Prosimo’s solution, as seen at Cloud Field Day last year. Prosimo Adaptive Service Insertion helps in deploying firewall resources in appropriate locations with minimal fuss by creating spokeless environments. Additionally, Prosimo introduces the possibility of directing guaranteed, critical traffic to a Prosimo instance to be processed, thus enabling businesses to ensure that their operational rules are respected. Finally, Prosimo’s tool allows for variable flow discovery and resource consumption, allowing organizations to manage their financial payments better.

Long Term Data Retention – What do I do?
Prompted by StorageCraft’s presentation at Storage Field Day, Alex Galbraith answers questions about long term data retention. This includes describing what the regulatory requirements are for long-term data retention as well as the consequences of losing said data. He also discusses StorageCraft’s latest backup software iteration which includes a local cache with cloud integration and the added ability to spin up a disaster recovery environment in the event of an outage to your primary data center.
Nokiaβs New AI Assistant for SR Linux Network Operating System
Sulagna Saha reviews SR Linux GPT, Nokiaβs new AI assistant for SR OS. Looking up network information shouldnβt require specialized coding, or browsing through pages of document. It is an inefficient approach, and AI conversational interfaces can replace it. The new SR Linux GPT made from the same technology as ChatGPT helps network engineers find answers to questions quickly and effortlessly. Read about it at Gestalt IT or watch the demo here on the Tech Field Day website.
Brainy Commvault
It’s no secret that a lot of storage companies are suddenly rebranding as data management companies. But how do you go beyond a rebrand and actually make substantive change to a large organization. Commvault shared their approach to managing this duality with a brain lateralization metaphor. Chin-Fah Heoh looks at if this answers his questions about why Commvault recently acquired Hedvig.

Between the delegates and the staff, we’ll get some answers!
InteropITX 2017 Breakdown
Frank Owen has been going to Interop, and it’s his self-professed favorite IT conference. He wrote up a review of the experience this year, which included the Workshop/Seminar pass for the first time. With this, he saw a lot of interesting sessions on the leadership track. He also attended a Tech Field Day Extra presentation from Paessler, with a look at their PRTG infrastructure monitoring solution. We’ll look forward to seeing Frank there again!
Whatβs New in Networking: Docker at TFD12
Pete Welcher got a look at Docker’s plans to improve their networking from their presentation at Networking Field Day last November. Pete is still trying to wrap his head around what containers mean for networking. But in this post, he raises some prescient concerns. With the proliferation of containers and micro-services, he sees a world with the network getting even chattier, as container-based app components “pass the buck” to other components to actually get work done. It’s an interesting concern, and it’ll be interesting to see how this is addressed and hopefully resolved.
MinIO β Not Your Fatherβs Object Storage Platform
Dan Frith definitely was intrigued by what he heard from MinIO at Storage Field Day. They showed off their private cloud focused high performance, software-defined, distributed object storage server infrastructure. They made the distinction the private and public cloud have very different needs, and designed their solution with peta-scale. The solution is entirely written in Go and open-sourced, allowing organizations to avoid having a license key as the ultimate vendor leverage. Storage folks may have a set of expectations when it comes to object storage, but Dan makes the case that this is very different from the typical object storage stack. Dan does have some questions about how they will monetize the approach, but allowing storage admins to dig into the code and selling support subscriptions has worked well for some open source companies.
