Troubleshooting Lessons Learned
Pete Welcher shares his lessons in troubleshooting, in this case it was the dreaded complaint of “the Wi-Fi is bad”. He breaks down how he approached two different scenarios with different companies. Both ended up using Netbeez’s client-side monitoring solution to help get regular and accurate upload and download speeds, which saved both human time, and increased accuracy. Make sure to checkout Pete’s post for an in-depth look into his techniques.
Storage Field Day Session Four: The Hybrid Cloud and MinIO
On their blog, MinIO writes that they didn’t have quite enough time to share their full hybrid cloud vision at Storage Field Day in January. In a quick review of their fourth session, Jonathan Symonds at MinIO shares their goals on how they can “win the hybrid cloud” and be better than AWS outside of AWS. Be sure to check out the post or, as Jonathan suggests, download the MinIO code and take it for a spin!
Project Nautilus Emerged as Dell’s Streaming Data Platform
At Storage Field Day, Gina Rosenthal got to hear from Dell EMC’s Project Nautilus, which uses open source tools to offer real time and historical analytics and storage. This essentially serves as a framework for those tool, with ingested data streams being tiered to long term storage, connected to analytics tools like Spark and Flink, then joined by Project Nautilus’ engine to provide for scale. This is all part of Dell EMC’s larger efforts to help blunt the impact of unstructured data growth. The open source streaming data platform with Project Nautilus is definitely a key addition to that toolkit.

Getting Object Storage Ready for the Enterprise – Scality Briefing Note
W. Curtis Preston was at Storage Field Day in October with Scality to hear about their latest and greatest. In this blog post, he reviews what Scality is offering in their Ring 6.4 release. It offers built in encryption with a third-party key management system included. Curtis thinks this is a much better solution for an object storage company, instead of trying to invent their own key management. It also includes a number of AWS integrations, as well as chargebacks and health checks. Additionally Scality also released an open-source S3 server that runs in a Docker container. This can be used to test how well apps can write to S3 storage. Object storage in the data center has always required some hoops to jump through, and Scality looks to have some offerings to smooth this out quite a bit.
VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery Enables As-A-Service Ease and Fast Recovery
At Tech Field Day in December, VMware highlighted its Cloud Disaster Recovery-as-a-service (DRaaS) solution. This offering orchestrates and implements cloud-based disaster recovery using a software-defined datacenter on VMware Cloud on AWS for customers with on-premises vSphere, allowing for low cost and fast recovery. VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery also allows organizations to regularly test their DR plans with automated jobs regularly checking for issues, making it a highly available environment that’s ready for recovery. NFD23 – PathSolutions
As a delegate at Networking Field Day, Gian Paolo Boarina had the opportunity to see PathSolutions present on their network monitoring solution TotalView. He writes that the scalability and broad view of the network make TotalView an intriguing option that he’d love to test out on his own network. Check out Gian Paolo’s article on his blog and the PathSolutions presentations from Networking Field Day on our website!
A look at Paessler PRTG
After seeing their presentation from Tech Field Day Extra at Cisco Live Europe, Jasper Bongertz decided to give Paessler PRTG a an extended look and write up his thoughts. It’s an impressively comprehensive rundown of the solutions monitoring capabilities. He walks through the setup processes, which is notably faster and easier than other open-source alternatives. He really likes how easy it is to setup monitoring sensors, which don’t require any complex configuration. In the end, although PRTG isn’t free like other alternative, the time you save may still make it the better value in the long run.
