Lee first heard about the potential of unlicensed spectrum back in 2015 at Wireless Field Day, in a session led by Dave Wright, now the President of the CBRS Alliance. The FCC recently announced that 150MHz in the 3.5 GHz spectrum was open for applications to use. Software Defined Networking and Its Effects on the Wireless Industry
Drew Lentz wrote about his experience at Networking Field Day last week. AS primarily someone focused on the wireless side (he is @WirelessNerd after all), he was a little intimidated at the prospect. In the end, he found it a fascinating experience. He particularly enjoyed seeing developments with software-defined networking, as he saw from UP Infusion, the Open Networking Summit, and from VMware’s NSX solution. In the end, he reflects on what he saw will inevitably impact the wireless side.
Getting Object Storage Ready for the Enterprise – Scality Briefing Note
W. Curtis Preston was at Storage Field Day in October with Scality to hear about their latest and greatest. In this blog post, he reviews what Scality is offering in their Ring 6.4 release. It offers built in encryption with a third-party key management system included. Curtis thinks this is a much better solution for an object storage company, instead of trying to invent their own key management. It also includes a number of AWS integrations, as well as chargebacks and health checks. Additionally Scality also released an open-source S3 server that runs in a Docker container. This can be used to test how well apps can write to S3 storage. Object storage in the data center has always required some hoops to jump through, and Scality looks to have some offerings to smooth this out quite a bit.

3 Linux Foundation networking projects that your business needs to know
The Linux Foundation is home to a lot of interesting projects. A lot of these are projects started by private companies, but moved over to the Linux Foundation to help foster a more active community and development. Keith Townsend runs down three interesting ones for IT architecture. One that he saw at Networking Field Day last week was PNDA, which is a big data analytics project that came originally from Cisco. PNDA is designed to work across data centers, a scale out approach to big data. The Data Plane Development Kit came out of Intel, and helps improve networking performance on commodity hardware. Finally, he introduces Open vSwitch, which came from VMware by way of Nicira.
What is Redfish?
Andrea Mauro wrote up on explainer of Redfish, the open industry standard specification, API and schema that specifies RESTful interface and utilizes JSON and Data. He highlights why it’s designed to supplant the Intelligent Platform Management Interface due to its extensive support of scripting languages and RESTful APIs. He sees it as mature enough to replace IPMI or proprietary solutions like Dell’s iDRAC.

Rubrik’s Build Is All About Education
We were fortunate to have Ned Bellavance as a delegate at Cloud Field Day earlier this year. He’s been giving a comprehensive look at many of the presenters, in this piece he looks at Rubrik. This included an architectural overview of their Polaris and Polaris Radar. The conversation then shifted to the Build project at Rubrik, an open source project that’s part of a broader effort to educate sysadmins who have never touched an API before. It took Ned a minute to understand why this was at Cloud Field Day, but the more he thought about it, the more important a piece it seemed.

Enrico Signoretti joined us as a delegate for our Tech Field Day Virtual with Red Hat event. For Enrico, rnterprises are quickly moving from an initial evaluation and exploration phase to extensive adoption of containers and microservices for all new applications under development. At the event, he saw how Red Hat is now uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between a rock-solid, open-source foundation already adopted by many enterprises across the world and the innovation introduced by containers and Kubernetes. All of this while mitigating the risk associated with the immaturity of the nascent Kubernetes platform. The Power of ONUG And What It Means To You
Tom Holllingsworth takes a look at what makes the Open Networking User Group special. Unlike other interest groups that bully their way into short term solutions in opposition to vendors, ONUG put together groups to solve communally agreed upon issues, to be presented to vendors as a solution, not a demand. Tom lays out the case why ONUG is setup to succeed in the long term, using their success at moving SD-WAN from a tech demo to a full fledged enterprise solution in just a few short years. Storage Field Day 19 – Vendor Previews
Chris Evans is no stranger to storage. His voice and experience is always welcome around the delegate table, and in this post, he brings both in previewing the presenting companies. He’s looking forward to the second day and hearing about Dell EMC doing deep dives into Isilon, DevOps and PowerOne. There are also a number of new presenters that Chris doesn’t have much background with. These include the DRaaS company Infrascale, the open-source enterprise-class object storage platform from MinIO, and Tiger Technologies. Tiger is competing in the crowded software-defined storage market, so Chris is interested to see how they will differentiate themselves. Western Digital will also be an interesting presentation, as the company has shifted it’s enterprise storage vision. Overall, it sounds like there’s not much Chris isn’t looking forward to at the event.
NetApp at DockerCon – What’s that about then?
For Ian Sanderson, he thought of NetApp as just another storage vendor. After seeing their Tech Field Day Extra presentation from DockerCon EU, he’s definitely changed his tune! He was impressed with the company’s efforts to fully support containers across their product portfolio, as well as putting in lots of open source code via The Pub.
