Packet Pushers Discussion of Cisco’s SDN Strategy

A group of independent thought leaders from the Networking Field Day/PacketPushers crew gathered at Cisco Live US 2012 to discuss the company’s Open Networking Environment (ONE) announcement. This announcement centered on a strategy for software-defined networking (SDN), and this was the focus of our discussion as well.

PNDA provides scalable and reactive network analytics

Tony Mattke looks at what he saw from PNDA. This is a project from the Linux Foundation, recently open sourced by Cisco. It serves as a platform for network analytics across data centers. PNDA sees this as vital for organizations with large volume high velocity data, something they see as vital for areas like the Internet of Things. Tony was really impressed by PNDA’s data assurance as well, which allows you to make sure everything is received and processed on every step of the data’s path across the network. Overall, Tony found PNDA further evidence that open source networking is alive and well!

TFD14 – NetApp

Larry Smith Jr. takes a look at the open source initiatives from NetApp, as presented at Tech Field Day earlier this year. This reflects a change in focus from the company. Previously seen as a pure storage company, their embrace of open source and DevOps culture through thePub marks a decidedly different company. Larry was particularly impressed by their NetApp Docker Volume Plugin, moving into the world of container storage management.

Networking Field Day 2: The Links

Tech Field Day always draws a great deal of attention, including thousands of tweets and dozens of blog posts and videos from delegates and bystanders alike. As usual, we will attempt to collect those links for reference and review, but this time we will start even before the event!

OpenContrail & dNOS Join The Linux Foundation, Get New Names

Drew Conry-Murray highlights the addition of two projects to the Linux Foundation, OpenContrail and dNOS. Drew got to hear about developments on OpenContrail at Networking Field Day from Juniper Networks, which is an open source derivation of their proprietary Contrail software. Drew isn’t sure if either project will become a major disruptor in the enterprise networking space, but he thinks the increasing move to open sourcing these projects will lead to “breaking the stranglehold of legacy vendors on how networks are built and operated.”

Check Out Our Videos From Cloud Field Day

We were delighted to host Red Hat as a presenter at Cloud Field Day earlier this month where they demonstrated the capabilities of Red Hat OpenShift. In a post on the OpenShift website, Red Hat shares recaps of their three presentations including a focus on OpenShift hosted and managed services, managing the open hybrid cloud, and finally Stu Miniman’s journey toward joining Red Hat. We look forward to seeing Red Hat at the next field day event!

The Fork in the Network to Code Road With Nautobot

On GestaltIT.com, Tom Hollingsworth writes about Network to Code’s Networking Field Day appearance, their Nautobot project, and the great path that they seem to be on. Tom also delves into the nature of open source projects, forks, and the role that developers play in the community. If you haven’t yet seen Network to Code’s Nautobot presentation from Networking Field Day, you can watch it on the Tech Field Day website!

Creating a Consistent User Experience Across the Network

Writing for Gestalt IT, Tom Hollingsworth details why consistency is a crucial component within security policies. Users desire the best possible connectivity experience without sacrificing security performance. In today’s hybrid work settings, how do we secure out-of-office devices that are beyond the corporate firewall? How can corporate networks remain secure on open Wi-Fi or cellular hotspots while still providing a high-quality user experience? Hollingsworth dives into Aruba EdgeConnect – the software-defined connectivity solution that will keep networks secure and work environments flexible. Check out the rest of his thoughts on the Network World website.
