At Tech Field Day this month, NetApp talked about their initiatives in open source and DevOps. Matt Crape was impressed with what he heard. Their Trident project gives developers resources to provision storage without having to go through a storage administrator. What makes this practical from an operations side is that the admins can preset quotas and storage limits to make sure their developers aren’t going overboard. Matt thinks its impressive the way NetApp is adapting their company to take advantage of a new IT landscape.

DriveScale Gives You Ethernet With a Side of Storage

I wrote up a review of what DriveScale showed off at Tech Field Day earlier this month. Their approach to disaggregating storage within the server rack is really interesting. As opposed to other designs I’ve seen from vendors, they offer something that’s remarkably open and adaptable. While they’re still in the appliance licensing game, they seem more interested in creating a unique architecture to make this happen. Worth the read if only to see their founders’ impressive resumes!

Considering The Future Of Juniper’s Contrail And OpenContrail/Tungsten

TFDx With AMD: More Than Just a Bag of Chips! (Part2)

AMD presented their VMware Architecture Migration Tool (VAMT), a VM migration and disaster recovery toolkit developed in partnership with VMware. The open-source tool, initially designed to automate the replatforming of VMs to AMD EPYC, also supports any migration between x86-to-x86 architecture, making it valuable for disaster recovery and general data resilience strategy. The tool’s key features include the automation of powering up and down of VMs, their movement to new locations, and clean-up after migration, thereby streamlining migration tasks and ensuring efficient applications functioning. Kentik and the Negative Roadmap

Tom Hollingsworth is the organizer of Networking Field Day, but he’s always a delegate at heart. In this post, he digs into what Kentik presented at the event last month. He was impressed with what Kentik had planned on their roadmap. But even more impressive was the company explicitly stating what they were not going to be getting into. This helps alleviate some of the concerns of feature creep that seem to happen with any solution over time. For Tom, this open perspective into their thought process can only spell good things going forward for Kentik.

They spent their time doing a deep dive into Consul, a set of tools around service mesh. New Role, Same Goal

Former Tech Field Day delegate Matt Oswalt surprised some folks by presenting for Juniper Networks at Networking Field Day. In this blog post, he writes about taking a new role with Juniper in a marketing capacity, shifting from focusing exclusively on code into a marketing role. In this, he’ll still be writing technical blog posts, contributing to open source, and researching new topics, but will now have more opportunities to share this with the community. We wish Matt the best of luck in the new role, and look forward to hearing from him more often!

Aruba and the Need for WPA3 with OWE

At Security Field Day, Aruba did a deep dive into a key feature of WPA3. Aruba had a lot of input into the successor to the long in the tooth WPA2, and detailed the optional Opportunistic Wireless encryption in the standard. This provides encryption for open wireless networks for information passed in the clear outside of the application payload. Tom Hollingsworth makes the argument that this should be a mandatory part of the standard, providing true defense in depth for traffic that falls outside SSL/TLS.

Red Hat OpenShift

Enrico Signoretti joined us as a delegate for our Tech Field Day Virtual with Red Hat event. For Enrico, rnterprises are quickly moving from an initial evaluation and exploration phase to extensive adoption of containers and microservices for all new applications under development. At the event, he saw how Red Hat is now uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between a rock-solid, open-source foundation already adopted by many enterprises across the world and the innovation introduced by containers and Kubernetes. All of this while mitigating the risk associated with the immaturity of the nascent Kubernetes platform. NetApp at DockerCon – What’s that about then?

For Ian Sanderson, he thought of NetApp as just another storage vendor. After seeing their Tech Field Day Extra presentation from DockerCon EU, he’s definitely changed his tune! He was impressed with the company’s efforts to fully support containers across their product portfolio, as well as putting in lots of open source code via The Pub.

How to get started with OpenConfig and YANG models

Most people agree that automation is the way of the future in enterprise networking, but getting to that point is much more problematic. Brandon Carroll gives an introduction on how to do this in open networking environments with OpenConfig. This vendor-neutral approach uses the data modeling language YANG to create a single model for your automation. This allows admins to not have to dig into individual CLI interfaces for each network device. Brandon’s only drawback to this approach isn’t technical, but rather organizational. Once an IT staff embraces automation, the technical merits become obvious.

Mist Systems is the Cloud WLAN Vendor With a (not so) Secret Weapon

Lee Badman says there is more than meets the eyes from Mist Systems after their Mobility Field Day presentation. Here he is referring to their Virtual Bluetooth Beacons (vBLE), which “open up endless possibilities once you realize the limitless business cases.” Lee is unsure about Mist’s future in general, but he is sure that their vBLE is a really interesting and unique technology that does have a future.

Aruba, leading the charge for wireless security

Scott Lester got to see some of Aruba’s latest AP hardware at Mobility Field Day last week. During the presentation, Aruba made the case why WPA3 was needed after a decade with WPA2, and why they are continuing to push for better standards. Scott also touches on one thing left out of the WPA3 spec, Opportunistic Wireless Encryption. This optional component has major security benefits for anyone connecting to an open AP.
