As every component of IT infrastructure gets bigger, we need to consider the impact of component faults. The so-called blast radius due to a failure has always been a consideration, and was taken into account with RAID, replication, high-availability architecture, and more. Even a small server has over a dozen cores, a terabyte of memory, and many terabytes of storage. We must also consider the inflation of data, adjusting for the size of applications and data sets, when comparing the impact versus historic systems. The reason components have become so large has more to do with economics of production and sale than with customer demands, and the ratio of storage capacity to data throughput has fallen, making the blast radius a real concern.

The cost-effectiveness of QLC, which stores four bits per cell compared to three bits for TLC, translates into approximately 25% savings in NAND costs, making it an appealing option for customers looking to optimize both performance and expenses.

The presentation also addressed concerns about endurance, clarifying that the drive’s performance should be viewed in the context of modern usage patterns. With most data center SSDs operating at less than one drive write per day (DWPD), QLC’s endurance rating allows it to cater to a wide range of applications without sacrificing reliability. Sun wrapped up by showcasing Solidigm’s fourth-generation QLC portfolio, which showcases significant advancements in performance and efficiency over previous iterations and competitive technologies, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering high-capacity, efficient storage solutions for data centers.
