Mohit Aron, CEO of Cohesity, gives an update on the company’s latest update and their mission to redefine secondary storage. He gave the delegates a better sense of the composition of the company and who are their customers. Mohit outlined the issue of the “Storage Iceberg”, where minority of data is the highly visible primary storage, but the vast majority is largely unseen and fragmented in various silos. The Cohesity strategy is to treat secondary storage holistically, and Mohit overviews how the Cohesity DataPlatform does this.

Cohesity Distributed File System with Apurv Gupta

Apurv Gupta, Head of Engineering reviews the details of the Cohesity File System. This distributed file system was built from the ground up to help address the particular issues surrounding secondary storage. The File system includes writable snapshots, distributed NFS/SMB, and removes dedupe and compression redundancy. Apurv runs down the key features of the architecture, including its unique handling of metadata.

Cohesity VMware Protection & Recovery Demo with Damien Philip

Damien Philip, Solutions Architect for Cohesity, gives a demo showing how their platform can protect a VMware environment. He starts by showing the Cohesity Dashboard view, which gives a simple GUI for viewing all protected data. From there, Damien walks the delegates through registering their VMware server with the system. Other items highlighted include recovery and setting up policy based rules to best leverage the features of the Cohesity platform.

Sai Mukundan, Product Manager for Cohesity, shows how their product integrates with VMware vRealize. He first walks through deployment of a virtual machine in the Cohesity Dashboard via blueprints. Cohesity is focused on making the deployment of the protection protocols simple, as well as easy to automate. Sai further shows how to update existing protection policies, allowing customers to easily adapt to changing requirements after a system is deployed. Finally, he shows how Cohesity handles VM destruction, and how to leverage their APIs to make sure users are fully aware of what is happening to their secondary data.

Chinmaya Manjunath, MTS at Cohesity, walks the delegates through a demo of how their product works for physical volumes. In the Cohesity Dashboard, it’s a simple task to register your servers, with full support for a variety of operating and file systems. Chinmaya reviews creating new backup jobs and how to change these with their policy based approach. He then goes over the recovery process with the Cohesity solution, how to choose the appropriate snapshots, as their new feature of doing recovery as a mount point.

Sai Mukundan, Product Manager for Cohesity, gives the first demo of their new DataPlatform Cloud Edition, running Cohesity in Azure for this instance. Cohesity developed this to help customers with testing/development, distaster recovery, and analytics. Sai walks through how to pair the Cohesity platform with Azure through their Cloud Replicate system. This replication actually translates the VM into the native format for the cloud infrastructure. The workflow is consistent with using any other cluster with Cohesity, emphasizing that they want this to be a seamless experience once setup.

Drew McCumiskey, Lead of Tech Marketing Efforts at Cohesity, demos some of the SQL specific features of their platform, focusing on recovery and cloning. He walks through setting up the ephemeral agent Cohesity uses for monitoring. Finally Drew kills the sample database to walk through the complete restore process in a matter of minutes.
