Gluware

At Networking Field Day, Jeff Fry got to hear from Gluware who discussed how the provide a solution to keep network configurations in compliance with the desired state. After the presentation, he tried out there Intelligent Network Automation Test Drive. He found it to be an effective way to overcome some of the hurdles in the current state of network automation, helping to mitigate both vendor specific automation tools, and the skills gap between CLI proficient network engineers and those that employs scripts. Jeff thinks a lot of organizations should give Gluware a look, as they have tools for deployment to audit, to security, and beyond.

Cohesity – DataPlatform in the Cloud

Josh De Jong takes a look at what Cohesity presented at Tech Field Day. While still a relatively new company, Josh thinks they have an interesting solution for secondary storage. This includes not just backup, but all data that isn’t in active production. Cohesity can eliminate a lot of storage bottlenecks by moving test/dev instances off of primary storage, and use their SSD based cache to speed up the process. Josh also liked Cohesity’s DataPlatform CE, which can back up your VMs in cloud native formats. Overall, while not all of their feautures are novel to the platform, they seem to have a robust solution for secondary storage.

Cloud Field Day 3; Day 1 – That One Thing…

With Cloud Field Day over delegate Chris Porter takes a look back at day one of the event. This saw presentations from Morpheus Data, Delphix, and Oracle. Morpheus shows how they create an abstration layer for cloud services while still retaining unique features to particular services. Delphix showed how they can speed up the cycle of getting database backups to test/dev systems. Finally, Oracle gave a deep dive into their Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

A Story of Three Companies

Jim Palmer wrote up a look at three different companies he saw at Mobiltiy Field Day last week, Arista Networks, Fortinet, and NETSCOUT’s. He looks at how each companies presentation impacted their messaging. From Arista trying to work in their acquisition of Mojo Networks into their broader portfolio, to Fortinet’s improved focus as a wireless company, and NETSCOUT’s divestment of their Handheld Network Test product line almost at the same time they were presenting to the delegates. Overall Jim got a little look at not just these company’s mobility solutions, but into the companies themselves.

CTS 087: AirCheck G2 w/ Netscout at MFD2

In this episode of the Wireless Network Engineering Podcast, Rowell Dionicio discusses the many features of NETSCOUT’s AirCheck G2, which he saw presented at Mobility Field Day. This includes the auto test, channel utilization, and profiles features. He also mentions NETSCOUT’s Link-Live, a cloud service that stores all your tests from various NETSCOUT devices, something Rowell found very useful.

CBRS and Starlink, Private LTE in the Wild

Mark Houtz tuned into Mobility Field Day and saw his friends at Celona presenting on deploying a CBRS network. Houtz dives deep into the world of CBRS and Starlink, their symbiotic relationship, and their potential to change the game for on-the-go internet connectivity. Houtz jumped at the opportunity to test out Private LTE in the CBRS Bands with Starlink. If you’re looking to cover larger areas, and Starlink is your only option, Houtz recommends Starlink and CBRS together to expand network connection. For people with little to no access to internet, and who are unable to afford fiber networks, a CBRS Fixed Wireless setup could be an appropriate solution. Check out the rest of his thoughts on markhoutz.com

Netrounds Marries Active Testing and Monitoring to Validate Network Performance and Availability

Drew Conry-Murray is no stranger to networking, but he hadn’t heard about Netrounds until they presented at Networking Field Day last month. They offer a pretty straightforward solution for service providers and large enterprises: Active verification that services are up and performing acceptably. They do this by running a wide array of test agents to get a client-side perspective on these services. Drew also liked the automation features available, with APIs available for third-party integrations.

Creating a New Physical Protection Infrastructure Group in VBR V11

Veeam presented at Tech Field Day in December and showcased its Veeam Availability Suite v11. For his blog, Al Rasheed walks through installing Veeam Backup & Replication on a Windows Domain Controller (DC) to “test the concept of creating a new Physical Protection Infrastructure group in the v11 console.” To see his detailed dive into this, check out his blog!

Hours saved by the AirCheck G2

NETSCOUT presented at last month’s Mobility Field Day event. The presentation has spurred several stories of how the company’s Aircheck G2 is an excellent tool for diagnosing wireless problems. This time, Brennan Martin joins in with an appreciation for the device’s Ethernet test. This makes it just as useful for tracing wires in tricky environments.

ThousandEyes – Mean Time to Innocence in minutes

Justin Cohen saw ThousandEyes present at Networking Field Day in August, but wanted to test out their solution before passing judgement. So after mulling on it for a while, what was his verdict? Essentially, it has to be seen to be believed. ThousandEyes differentiates in network monitoring by combining agents within your network with their SaaS model of sensors from all over the Internet. This allows engineers to not just trace a path forward to an endpoint, but also work backwards. Combined with great visualization, they’re able to pinpoint causes outside of an enterprise network, allowing users to save time chasing their tail. Add in flexible licensing, and Justin thinks it’s a great tool to let you drill down to root network slow down problems!

Forward Networks – go ahead, break it

Amy Arnold laments the plight of the network engineer. The agonize over network design, try to come up with every conceivable failover scenario, and then deal with the consequences. Some have the aid of a lab to help test their configuration, most don’t. That’s why what Forward Networks presented at Networking Field Day was so interesting. It allows for you to model over your network in software, and then break it in every conceivable way. Forward’s model shows every a packet can possibly go, allowing the engineer to see exactly how a scenario will play out. She was justifiably concerned about how their product will be priced going forward, but otherwise it seems like a valuable tool in the engineer’s arsenal.

NetAlly’s AirCheck G2 Gets a Facelift With Version 4.0 Firmware

Tim Dennehy got a look at the latest firmware for the esteemed AirCheck G2 at Mobility Field Day. This came during NetAlly’s presentation, the company to come out of Netscout spinning off their tooling business. He walks through the installation process and some of the new features, including 802.11ax visibility, a utilization graph for 802.11 and non-802.11 traffic, and uploading of iPerf test results.

The Silent Threat of Dark Data

How much do you think about secondary storage? Probably not a ton. It’s all the data that’s not mission critical, the reams of backup data, archives, test/dev, and machine generated data that lives in separate silos. Cohesity demoed a holistic solution to deal with this mess, but why do you need it? James Green knows the answer: dark data. All that data that sits in storage, without metadata or context, data you don’t even know is there. Its a problem for any business that keep financial or medical records. All it takes is one malicious attack, and all that data you didn’t even know you had becomes a huge liability. Cohesity’s solution seems like a ray of light into this work. James breaks down how exactly they go about it.

My Time at Networking Field Day 22

The delegates to Field Day events often say that the experience is like drinking from the IT firehose. Over the course of three days, the dozen delegates get to hear intense technical session and engage in conversations with a number of diverse companies, and it can test the mental elasticity of even the most seasoned veteran. Evan Mintzer was recently in Silicon Valley for Networking Field Day and writes about the overall experiences in this post. The best part about the format is that it doesn’t allow for immediate hot takes, instead rewarding introspection and mental digestion about everything they heard. We can’t wait to hear Evan’s thoughts on all the presenters from the event as he works through all the information.

Shivering With Microsegmen……..tation

One of the things that struck Tricia Howard about Security Field Day was the preponderance of companies with solutions using microsegmentation. This isn’t a new solution in networking, but it is pretty new for security. The emphasis with these approaches was isolation as quickly as possible, quarantining endpoints to prevent further spread. These concepts were wrapped with an emphasis on speed and ease of deployment, otherwise they don’t get used. For Tricia, the next step is to get these solutions into your deployments to test them out.

Geek Tools – Cape Networks at Mobility Field Day 2

Jonathan Davis heard from Cape Networks at Mobility Field Day last month. He found their client-side monitoring hardware to be compelling, so much so that he used a test unit to solve a persistent outage problem he had previously be unable to consistently locate. By providing an always-on client-side sensor, Cape Networks is able to find problems proactively, the same way regular wireless users do.
