Tiger Technology Is Bridging the Gap
Even though they’ve been around since 2004, Tiger Technology made their debut presentation at Storage Field Day earlier this year. In this post Dan Frith digs into some of the solutions they presented at the event. This includes their Tiger Bridge, a filter driver that offers capacity management, cloud integration, and hierarchical storage management across storage platforms by a global namespace. From what Dan saw at the event, Tiger Technology did a good job of ensuring that the bridge between on-prem storage and multiple cloud storage options is reliable. This should allow organizations to more easily navigate between optimizing architecture for how their users want to work and storage companies that deliver solutions to those customers.
Is Your Network Failing or Your Application Failing? A Perspective About Kentik!
In this blog post about Kentik’s presentation at Networking Field Day, Faisal Khan discusses the concept of network observability and how Kentik’s platform tackles the challenges of network troubleshooting and visibility. With the increasing complexity of networks and the cloudification of applications, enterprises need comprehensive visibility across diverse sources. Kentik’s approach involves collecting and analyzing data from various network and application sources to provide meaningful insights and pinpoint issues quickly, ensuring reliable networks and a great digital experience.

If you are anything like Wolfgang Stief, you are very excited that LTO9 was finally announced in mid-September! Wolfgang, a Field Day delegate, expands on his thoughts of tape and how it’s a reliable and mature basic technology that gets the expected amount of data under control in the long term. Check out Wolfgang’s post for more in depth information!
When Is It Not Always DNS?
During their recent Networking Field Day presentation, BlueCat Networks posited that DNS is unreliable because it was never designed to actually be reliable. Tom Hollingsworth looks at the security implications of this, and the merits of BlueCat’s unified DNS, DHCP and IPAM platform.
Out-Of-Band Management for Day 0, Day 1 and Day 2 Operations With Opengear Smart OOB
Opengear’s Smart Out-of-Band (OOB) solution is expanding and capable of serving customers for everyday use cases instead of just emergency scenarios. Opengear initially focused on console server access and sideline OOB management, providing features like Lighthouse software that offers centralized management for all Opengear appliances and deployed resources. The company’s Smart OOB provides reliable connectivity and a management plane for deployment, automation, and troubleshooting, and their enhancement, Routed Management Fabric, creates an overlay that enables routed IP access based on industry standards for people outside the serial space. CloudIQ is looking out for your storage system’s health
Jon Klaus writes about Dell EMC’s CloudIQ presented at Storage Field Day 16. CloudIQ’s purpose is to keep track of your storage system performance, health, capacity and notify you in case of any anomalies. Jon was impressed by CloudIQ’s functionality, but also by it being free to use for those with a Dell EMC Unity storage system and having a responsive and active development team.

Justin Cohen of Can I Tech It? digs into the recent app release by Cisco: APIClarity. The tool keeps tabs on your microservices’ API calls, and is free on Github. Don’t forget to reach the end of the piece for a great demo of the tool!
A True Private Cloud With SoftIron
While the cloud has its advantages, the notion of on-premises infrastructure regaining its appeal cannot be ignored, as SoftIron emphasizes at Cloud Field Day 19 with their HyperCloud solution. SoftIron’s product promises a true private cloud experience with a focus on simplification and fully integrated hardware and software, designed and manufactured in-house, catering especially to heavily regulated sectors. If you’re evaluating a transition to or revitalization of your on-premises environment, HyperCloud might just offer that seamless, tear-free operability and management you’ve been seeking, melding the advantages of both on-prem and public cloud paradigms. Read more in this article by Field Day delegate Matt Allford.
VMware SaaS-ifies HCX With HCX+
In this article, W. Curtis Preston examines VMware’s presentation at Tech Field Day Extra, specifically their novel HCX+ product. This cloud-based version of their HCX product aims to simplify operations and help customers navigate through their mobility and migration needs. The focus of HCX+ is to modernize enterprises by assisting a seamless, disruption-free migration—from on-prem vSphere to cloud services like VMware Cloud on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure—and provide a cohesive view of a large VMware deployment.
Droplet Computing delivers universal app virtualization
Chris Evans shares his thoughts on Droplet Computing, who debuted their browser-based application containers at the event. Chris sees this as a way to free applications from any OS or architecture dependency. If Droplet can make the delivery seamless, he sees a bright future ahead for the company.
Meet Field Day Delegate – Manon (“Mae”) Lessard
Mae Lessard is coming to Mobility Field Day next week, so we decided to get to know her a little better. In this Meet the Delegates interview, we asked her how she got into IT, what she does in her free time, where she sees the industry heading, and more.
XFD10: Digital Twin Powers Unite to Secure Your Network With Forward Networks
Matt Tyrer writes about Forward Networks digital twin technology, which he learned about at Security Field Day 10. This unique strategy enhances data security by allowing network environments to be audited and secured digitally. The platform creates a fully operational digital copy of a network, enabling risk-free experimentation and validation to identify vulnerabilities and ensure network integrity across various infrastructures, including cloud and multi-cloud. Forward Networks’ digital twin solution emphasizes its capability to improve network security without direct live-environment intervention, providing a safe modeling space for administrators to proactively manage and secure their network landscapes.
Tackling Troublesome Tunnels With 128 Technology
Can you build a modern SD-WAN network without using tunnels? 128 Technology thinks that you can and they have the services to prove it. Tom Hollingsworth takes a look at their presentation from Networking Field Day 20 and how they’re building tunnel-free networks.
Western Digital Are Keeping Composed
Although they presented a broad set of technology and products at Storage Field Day in February, Dan Frith focused on Western Digital’s composable infrastructure offerings. He likes their story and sees composability as a technology to “free the average enterprise IT shop from the shackles of resource management ineptitude”. It’s not magic, but it’s certainly cool!

Nile – Network as a Service – Considerations for Adoption
Attending Network Field Day gave Ryan Lambert a first-hand look at Nile’s innovative Network as a Service (NaaS) offering, a service model that manages and maintains a customer’s network infrastructure. Nile stands out by not only managing and monitoring networking equipment but also engaging with partners for on-site surveys to ensure top-notch performance, guaranteeing service levels for the hassle-free operation of customer networks. However, it’s important for customers to understand the shared responsibility in such managed solutions, particularly regarding the physical environment and specific requirements, ensuring Nile’s service guarantee aligns with their needs.
Ryussi MoSMB – High performance SMB
Chin-Fah Heoh saw a presentation from first time Storage Field Day company Ryussi, and they were talking about their MoSMB product, a proprietary SMB stack. Chin-Fah wondered what benefits it has over SAMBA, which has a long legacy and is free. Unlike SAMBA, MoSMB is designed for high availability and more demanding workloads. It also has support for enterprise grade applications like MS SQL and MSCS. Chin-Fah thinks there’s definitely an eager market for an enterprise-grade network file share system, and MoSMB seems up to the task.
Forward Networks: Bringing Sanity to a Network Near You
Max Mortillaro isn’t exactly a networking guy, so it takes a lot for him to have a “wow” moment when hearing from them.
