My Tech Field Day Experience
Evan Mintzer attended his first Field Day event as a delegate for Security Field Day. He really appreciated the unique “un-conference” quality of the event, which allowed for real communication and community building between the delegates and the presenting companies. He was really impressed not just with the technical content, but with the organization and thought that went into organizing it. It was great to have Evan there and we can’t wait to have him back.
Tech Field Day 13 Preview: Uila
As enterprise tools become increasingly virtualized, it gets harder to properly visualize performance systematically. Visibility radically decreases, leaving the prospective engineer in a veritable blackhole. That’s why Thom Greene is excited to dig into Uila’s presentation at Tech Field Day, coming up in February. Their solution drills down the virtual network, identifying traffic on the application level. This allows users to have a visualized map of performance between applications in real time. As workloads become increasingly virtualized, a solution like Uila’s is vital to let you know what is going on.
AMD With #CFD18 – What’s a Chip Manufacturer Doing in a Cloud Conference?
Nathan Bennett gives an overview of AMD’s presentation on cloud native solutions at Cloud Field Day. AMD discussed the increasing trend towards running solutions within a DPU (Data Processing Unit) in cloud environments. Bennett challenges AMD’s focus, suggesting that the real impact of chipset makers comes from how the tech is tailored and used by individual hyperscalers, stressing the need for customers to pay attention to the broader context of what chip manufacturers are doing.
Day Two Cloud 093: Don’t Get Your Whittling Badge
Following their appearance at Cloud Field Day in March, Kit Colbert and Dormain Drewitz from VMware sat down with Ned Bellavance of “Ned in the Cloud” to talk about their presentation. In his blog on the matter, Bellavance talks about their discussion on modernizing applications to meet the real-time demands of today’s customers. Read the blog to see what they discussed, and be sure to tune into VMware’s Tech Field Day presentation to hear more about their recent announcements.
Infinidat’s ~90% (average read hit) solution
Ray Lucchesi reviews Infinidat’s presentation from Storage Field Day 16, impressed by their incredible 90% read hit solution. Ray says that the real challenge Infinidat faces is figuring out how to perform as well as an all flash array with hybrid flash disk storage, and it seems like they’ve accomplished that goal.
Apstra at NFD16
Terry Slattery got a look at Apstra at Networking Field Day last year. He was impressed by the potential of their Apstra Operating System for intent-based networking. Now the company has announced support not just for more modern leaf-spine architectures, but for VXLAN overlays as well. He looks forward to the day when he can use AOS in a real network deployment.
Forward Networks Gets Cloudy
Forward Networks, a significant player in the Digital Twin product space, showcased their advanced capabilities at Cloud Field Day in January, focusing primarily on network assurance tool development. In addition to expanding its product range to accommodate more devices/vendors and protocols, Forward Networks now also gathers and models cloud state data to predict network behaviour efficiently. Moving towards cloud footprints’ visualization with Amazon, Azure, and Google, Forward Networks has emerged as a real outperformer in managing security and complex application flows, and devising fast, intuitive solutions to complicated problems.
Storageless Data!?
At Storage Field Day in January, Ray Lucchesi had the opportunity to join us as a delegate and see Hammerspace’s presentation. At the event, Hammerspace showcased its vision for storageless data. In this blog, Ray explains, “Essentially, Hammerspace creates a global file system for your data, across any locations you wish to use it, with great caching, optimized data transfer and with real storage behind it.” For more of Ray’s thoughts on Hammerspace and storageless data, check out his blog!
Shiny new NetPath Services
SolarWinds showed off their latest with NetPath at Networking Field Day. Amy Arnold seemed impressed by their solution. NetPath isn’t just a traceroute visualization tool, it uses “real” network traffic from Windows-based pollers on the network. This allows an engineer to get a better sense of how traffic flows, without worrying about packets being dropped (as much) by devices on the network. Amy says it best, “any tool that expands insight into what packets are doing is a beautiful thing.”
Decouple Disks and Compute with DriveScale
Eric Shanks takes a look at what DriveScale presented at Tech Field Day last month. In their solution, he sees a real value play for Hadoop workloads. Whereas other applications can used virtualized storage arrays, Hadoop benefits from direct drive access to their distributed file system so it can manage storage. DriveScale allows for this with their disaggregated storage solution via their adapter. This allows you to add storage without throwing a whole other pizza box into the rack. It’s a pretty specific use case, but Eric sees it giving a lot of value to the growing base of customers using Hadoop.
Komprise: Data Management Made Easy
Max Mortillaro considers that while data management and secondary storage are big concerns in modern IT, they are far from a solved problem. At Storage Field Day last month, he heard a presentation from Komprise, which seeks to bring a real world focus to data management. Max outlines how they can help slay the serpent de mer traditionally associated with data management.
