Personnel: Josh Hilliker

Josh Hilliker, Cloud Solutions Architect, SMG Cloud TSS, introduces Intel’s vision for telemetry to enable intelligent cloud and data centers. The goal is to simplify and automate infrastructure management and reduce human involvement in day-to-day operations. Artificial intelligence can deliver intelligent infrastructure as part of a modernization process driving from monitoring and telemetry to action, control, and complete automation. The telemetry and analytics solution exposes the right metrics and provides control surfaces for infrastructure efficiency, reliability, security, and performance. Intel Telemetry Collector enables a modern autonomous data center based on telemetry from Intel Platform Monitoring Units (PMU) and Top-Down Microarchitecture Analysis Method (TMAM). This technology can be used by both cloud service providers and their customers, thanks to the Intel Telemetry Collector and tools like perf, ipmitool, and dstat. It can even be used inside containers and inside Docker. For more information, visit http://www.intel.lv/IntelTelemetry

Confidential Computing with Intel SGX

Personnel: Garry Binder, Laura Martinez, Scott Raynor

Garry Binder, Senior Security Architect, introduces the data center security landscape and current trends for a data center security strategy to protect data and platforms without compromising performance. Data in use must be protected from malicious insiders, hackers, and third parties, and this is the reason for a confidential computing-based approach. Intel is a founding member of the Confidential Computing Consortium, which is focused on securing data while it is in use and driving compatibility across the industry. Intel has developed Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX) to help protect against software attacks, increase protections for secrets, prevent future attacks, and provide an option for hardware-based attestation. Joining the presentation is Scott Raynor, Senior Application Engineer, who discusses Intel SGX in detail, and Laura Martinez, Director of Security Marketing, who presents use cases and real-world examples of confidential computing. Advancements in Cloud Data Management with Scality

Event: Cloud Field Day 10

Appearance: Scality Presents at Cloud Field Day 10

Company: Scality

Personnel: Giorgio Regni, Paul Speciale

Over the last few years, concepts around hybrid and multi-cloud data management have received increasing attention from customers and solutions providers. In its early forms, cloud data management has focused on solving discrete use-cases such as cloud data archiving (moving cold/dormant data to cloud storage), bursting data to the public cloud for processing, or mirroring data to the cloud for business continuance (D/R solutions). A new set of requirements is now emerging that creates a need for more custom cloud data management policies, to help solve data-centric problems in areas such as edge computing, AI/ML and to ensure that data sovereignty rules are enforced.

In this session, Scality Chief Product Officer, Paul Speciale, and Scality Co-Founder & CTO, Giorgio Regni, we will discuss and demonstrate a new visual data management policy UI and engine that promises to deliver a solution for these new requirements.

European Union Data Sovereignty and the Role of Storage Providers with Jerome Lecat of Scality

Event: Cloud Field Day 10

Appearance: Scality Presents at Cloud Field Day 10

The world has become globally dependent on digital information. Enterprises, service providers and government agencies depend on free access to data as delivered through IT infrastructure and underlying technologies, and delivered as cloud services. This puts governments in the position of ensuring that their regional and local industries have access to this information technology, and that the supply chain is not disrupted. After the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in 2016, the EU published regulations on the free flow of non-personal data (FFD), plus a Cybersecurity Act and Open Data Directive in 2019. Early in 2020, the EU released a new Digital Strategy, which includes a five-year policy roadmap and a proposal for the creation of a single European market for data. This is underpinned on the idea of Data Sovereignty, which focuses on the intention of the EU to reduce its technological dependencies on foreign entities, and rely more on European cloud services.

In this session, Scality CEO and Founder Jerome Lecat will discuss the principles of data sovereignty, the emergence of new cloud service providers to address these EU specific requirements, and the role of storage technology vendors in this forming landscape.

Nigel Poulton and NetApp Assess the State of Kubernetes

Event: Cloud Field Day 10

Appearance: NetApp Presents at Cloud Field Day 10

Company: NetApp

Personnel: Kirk Ryan, Nigel Poulton

Independent Kubernetes trainer and expert Nigel Poulton joins Principal Technologist Kirk Ryan of NetApp to discuss the state of Kubernetes and the cloud in 2021. Poulton points out that, 7 years into the development of Kubernetes, most of the groundwork is stable and mature, but the higher-level management tools are iterating at a fast pace. The process of getting and installing Kubernetes is a lot easier thanks to hosted Kubernetes platforms developed by cloud service providers. The next trend is to focus more on the applications being deployed in the cloud rather than the infrastructure. The future is in integrated systems that bring the legacy of enterprise tools to this new world of cloud applications.
